Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) - SEMH School

Location: Middlewich, Cheshire
Contract: Full-time, long-term position
Salary: Competitive and dependent on experience

About the Role

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join a dynamic SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) school in Middlewich. This is a full-time opportunity for an individual who thrives on making a real difference in the lives of young people who require additional emotional and behavioural support.

You will work closely with class teachers and pastoral staff to deliver high-quality support, small group interventions, and tailored learning experiences that help students achieve their potential both academically and personally.

Key Responsibilities

Support teaching and learning across the curriculum under the direction of the class teacher.

Lead small group or 1:1 interventions to promote academic, social, and emotional progress.

Assist in planning, delivering, and evaluating lessons and activities.

Foster positive relationships and manage challenging behaviour using de-escalation strategies.

Monitor and record student progress, providing feedback to teachers and parents where appropriate.

Supervise classes during teacher absence and ensure a safe, inclusive learning environment.

Contribute to the development of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behaviour support plans.

Collaborate with teaching staff, SENCO, and external agencies to support pupil wellbeing and development.

Must-Have Skills & Experience

HLTA qualification or equivalent experience supporting learning at a higher level.

Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH, autism, or behavioural needs.

Strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to stay calm under pressure and use positive behaviour management techniques.

Good literacy, numeracy, and ICT skills.

Good to Have

Experience working in a special school or alternative provision setting.

Knowledge of trauma-informed and restorative practices.

Training in Team Teach, MAPA, or other behaviour management approaches.

Understanding of EHCPs and differentiated learning strategies.

Nice to Have

First Aid or Mental Health First Aid qualification.

Experience supporting speech and language or sensory needs.

A genuine passion for helping young people overcome barriers to learning and develop confidence.
