Join Biffa as an Operations Manager
Help drive excellence at our facility in Birmingham. Working days: Monday to Friday, from 1pm to 10pm.
Role Overview
To efficiently and effectively manage the day-to-day operations of the depot, ensuring first-class customer service against predefined KPIs. This role supports the Depot Manager in operational, safety, and service performance.
Core Responsibilities
1. Provide leadership, give work instructions, and monitor the performance of the traffic dispatcher team, reviewing depot KPIs related to service, safety, and profitability.
2. Manage daily shift operations, including driver supervision and vehicle availability, in collaboration with fleet management.
3. Motivate, train, and develop team members.
4. Address underperformance and implement disciplinary procedures as needed.
5. Manage absences, including conducting return-to-work interviews.
6. Plan for new work mobilization and manage seasonal challenges like bank holidays and Christmas, ensuring resource and route optimization.
7. Handle routing and service issues daily, ensuring a positive customer service experience, including occasional customer visits.
8. Contribute to cost control efforts, seeking efficiency improvements, reducing operating costs, and meeting budget targets.
9. Ensure adherence to health and safety protocols, including training, operating procedures, near-miss reporting, and emergency procedures.
10. Deputize for the Depot Manager and perform additional tasks as required.
Qualifications & Experience
* Experience as a Transport Manager or similar role in the services or logistics industry.
* People management and health & safety management in a unionized environment.
* Proven track record of meeting service delivery KPIs.
* Successful resource management and cost control experience.
* Understanding of Lean Management principles.
* Experience with route planning software such as Route Monkey or DPS (LogiX).
Technical Knowledge
* Knowledge of local geography and transport legislation is desirable.
* Understanding of working within a time-critical service environment.
* Waste industry knowledge, including relevant laws, is a plus.
