Job Title: Deputy Communications Manager

Responsible to: Head of Communication and Student Engagement

Grade: Band D, Spinal Point 19 (£30,889 per annum, inclusive of £2,508 London Weighting)

Hours: Full time, 37 hours per week. Some evening and weekend work will be required.

Location: On campus with some hybrid working possible

Line manages: Student Staff

Who are we?

Part business, part charity, part membership body – students’ unions are all seriously fun places to work. They are organisations in their own right. Professionally run, but different. Professional teams support Elected student leaders so as they make change, improve lives and fulfil potential, we help make it happen.

The Union of Brunel Students has a small but impactful staff team dedicated to serving the needs and interests of our members. Our size allows us to work closely together and make decisions quickly, while our passion for creating positive change means that every member of our team has an impact on helping us deliver our Vision to ensure that every student thrives at Brunel.

We are one of more than 600 students’ unions across the country. And with more than 15,000 members, 150 clubs and societies, a huge range of services and a bold strategy, we’re one of the most exciting.

What’s the job?

We’re looking for a creative and hands on Deputy Communications Manager to lead the day-to-day activity of the Communications Team and help boost student participation across the Union. From planning campaigns to creating standout content, you’ll coordinate our communication channels and make sure students know who we are, how we represent them, and how they can get involved.

You’ll work closely with teams across the Union to support officer priorities, shine a spotlight on student life, promote key events, and grow engagement with sports, societies, nightlife, and elections. This role is all about designing, creating, and delivering content that is inclusive and really connects on campus and online. You’ll collaborate with student influencers, ambassadors, and partners to bring our messages to life in fresh and exciting ways.

This is a delivery focused role for someone who thrives on variety, loves generating ideas, and enjoys working with a talented team. If you’re confident creating content, full of creative energy, and ready to get stuck in, this role is for you.

Who you are:

You’re a creative and confident communicator who loves making content that really connects with people. You’ve got experience running campaigns across digital channels but you’re not just about planning. You’re hands-on, whether it’s designing graphics, writing copy, filming TikToks, or capturing life on campus, you enjoy being involved in every step.

You’re comfortable working in a fast moving, team focused environment where collaboration is key. This role also offers a step into team leadership as you will coordinate the Communications Team’s daily workflow and manage student staff roles within the department. Whether it’s a student campaign, club event, or officer priority, you and your team are there creating and sharing content that feels real and relevant to Brunel students.

You understand what clicks with Gen Z and keep up with the latest trends and tools. You’re organised, full of ideas, and excited to be a key part of a team that puts students first in everything it does.

Why apply?

Because you're inspired by the opportunity to make a real difference in students’ lives.

As a Students’ Union and registered charity, our mission is simple but powerful: “To ensure every student thrives at Brunel”. We’re anything but corporate – a dynamic, values-driven team of passionate individuals committed to positive change. We work in an unconventional, energetic environment where creativity and purpose go hand in hand.

In return for your passion and commitment we offer a flexible and supportive workplace, and an excellent holiday allowance – all designed to help you thrive too.

We are proud to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, age, gender, or disability. We’re building a diverse, inclusive team that reflects and champions the diversity of our student community.

And just so you know – your application will be read by a real person. We don’t use AI to screen candidates, because we genuinely care about getting to know you. So, when you apply, write your personal statement as if you're speaking directly to us. We’re looking forward to hearing your story.

BENEFITS

We offer a generous benefits package to reward our staff's hard work and commitment:

* Pension Scheme – statutory workplace pension scheme ‘NEST’.
* Generous holiday allowance - 25 days a year plus bank holidays. Additional days are usually given at Easter and Christmas in line with the University closure dates (usually about 5 additional days a year).
