Overview
Aqua Consultants is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support United Utilities on the Better Rivers Programme. The role involves delivering mechanical design, hydraulic calculations, and managing multidisciplinary teams to improve infrastructure and reduce spills by 60%.
Hybrid working – 2-3 days per week at the United Utilities Lingley Mere office, with site visits as required.
Responsibilities
* Deliver project tasks, designs and manage a multidisciplinary team delivering solutions on wastewater infrastructure and non‑infrastructure projects at various stages of the project life‑cycle, ensuring on‑time and on‑budget delivery.
* Site surveys and assess plant capacity to meet future demands.
* Conduct feasibility, outline and detailed mechanical design – P&IDs, hydraulic design, design risk assessments, control philosophies, commissioning strategies, cost and programme estimations, plant and equipment specifications, and carbon calculations.
* Produce technical reports at all stages of the project life‑cycle.
* Produce general arrangement and detailed mechanical design drawings.
* Support fee proposals or service offers; develop activity schedules/work plans.
* Participate in hazard studies including HAZOP, Access, Lifting and Maintenance.
* Develop standard and bespoke design solutions for the water industry and beyond.
* Check and review calculations and reports prepared by others.
* Consider CAPEX and OPEX implications of design decisions.
Qualifications
* Extensive experience and understanding of sewage treatment processes and equipment/system requirements.
* Experience in hydraulic calculations (pipelines, pump duties).
* Experience with proposal fee/hour estimation for design schemes.
* Ability to generate innovative solutions and deliver added value.
* Ability to manage and mentor junior engineers.
* Ability to manage CAD resources to produce engineering drawings.
* Experience in feasibility, outline and detailed design.
* Technical review experience.
* Commercial and contractual awareness.
* Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365.
* Industry applicable BEng, BSc or equivalent in mechanical engineering.
* Chartered Engineer or working towards this.
* Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
* Trustworthy and ethical, exercising discretion where required.
