The Opportunity:
You will join the Wellcome-funded research project, ‘Medicine without Doctors: Reimagining Care and Voice through Play’, which examines the changing landscape of medical authority, voice, and care. Your role involves developing a 5-year project on the Physician Associate case study, aligning with the broader project goals and employing methodologies from medical sociology, anthropology, STS, and history to study the emergence and standardization of Physician Associates in the UK NHS.
Medicine without Doctors is a six-year project exploring the authority of medical practices in the UK through case studies including LGBTQ+ health, Autonomous Systems, abortion care, and Physician Associates. It is grounded in the sociology of care and philosophy of voice, aiming to produce interdisciplinary knowledge. The project emphasizes collaborative development of play methodologies to creatively address complex issues.
This full-time, fixed-term position is based on campus for 60 months starting April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2031.
Your skills and attributes for success:
* A PhD in a relevant discipline such as social sciences, history, STS, anthropology, or related fields with strong qualitative research skills and familiarity with law and policy.
* Understanding of current issues in medicine and health systems.
* Experience designing and conducting empirical research, including data collection and analysis from interviews, focus groups, surveys, or other methods.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively to deliver research projects.
* Compassionate and socially responsible approach to work.
