Consultant Psychiatrist in FCAMHS

Clinical leadership, innovation and service performance are key components to all our consultant positions. We will provide the necessary training and development opportunities for all Consultants joining the Trust to ensure they are able to deliver these components of their role.

Main duties of the job

* Specialist consultation, assessment, formulation, and intervention for young people with complex needs and high risk forensic behaviours across community, residential, custodial, and secure settings.
* Consistent, flexible provision across the region, regardless of a young person's placement or location.
* Joint working with CAMHS, learning disability and autism services, and other children's services to support the management of complex, high risk cases.
* Delivery of evidence based assessment and intervention throughout the care pathway, including support with transitions into and out of secure services.
* Clear, needs led recommendations on placement, ensuring secure inpatient admission only when clinically indicated.
* Embedding safeguarding principles and promoting developmental, relational, and family inclusive approaches.
* Supporting CETRs and aligning with Transforming Care for young people with learning disabilities and/or autism.
* Enhancing local provision through specialist formulation, risk assessment expertise, and strategic advice.
* Identifying gaps in provision and contributing to service development and system improvement.
* Providing multi‑agency training on working with high‑risk young people, risk assessment and management, and the interface between key legislative frameworks (e.g., Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, Children Act, Education Act, SEND reforms, Youth Justice).

Job responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

FCAMHS is commissioned by NHS England and delivered by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust. The team provides specialist forensic mental health expertise for young people under 18 across Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex. Consultant Psychiatrists are a valuable and finite resource within our clinical services and while the primary responsibility for every consultant is the delivery of a high‑quality clinical service, all consultants will be expected to be actively involved in the strategic development of the service and work with their non‑medical senior leaders to steer the development of their service in line with the strategic direction of the organisation.

Overview of the general duties/responsibilities:

1. Be an active participant and leader of the team, contributing to and developing the operational and clinical function of the service (with a focus on the management and treatment of the high‑risk patients).
2. Ensure clinical audit of the service and implementation of appropriate assessment tools and outcome measures as an integrated part of the service and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
3. Participate and engage with service development and wider Trust development initiatives.
4. Provide evidence‑based interventions for patients under their care, and support management of the service according to Trust policies and NICE standards.
5. Liaise promptly with patients, carers, other psychiatry colleagues, general practitioners, and voluntary and statutory organisations to ensure high‑quality well‑coordinated care.
6. Complete administrative tasks associated with the care of patients in a timely manner. This will include recording clinical activity accurately, comprehensively, and promptly. It also includes ensuring that relevant KPIs, clustering and CQUIN requirements are fulfilled within their service.
7. The post holder will share responsibility for and will actively participate in the provision of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with consultant colleagues in the Trust, and will also contribute to teaching, supervision and training of staff of other disciplines.
8. The post holder will provide clinical supervision to junior doctors as necessary.
9. Maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Approved Clinician/ Mental health Act Section 12 (2) approval and to abide by professional codes of conduct.
10. Comply with the Trusts agreed policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions, and to take an active role in the financial management of the service and support the clinical director and other managers in preparing plans for services.
11. Offer supervision to other members, both medical and non‑medical.
12. Travel between Trust sites will be expected where required to facilitate the delivery of the role.


Management

1. Be responsible for playing a full part in the management and further clinical development of services and contribute fully to the development of the service.
2. Participate developing policies and ways of working in collaboration with other agencies.
3. Contribute to the clinical governance within the team by responding to formal and informal complaints, SUI and SIR investigations and sharing learning from the same.
4. Regularly attend local Consultants meetings and other relevant service management meetings.
5. Be expected to participate in various committees and project teams to support the advancement of clinical care and quality improvement.


Person Specification


Education / Qualifications

* Full GMC registration and licence to practice
* MBBS or equivalent
* Approved clinician status or eligible to attend training
* MRCPsych or Equivalent


Experience

* Proven experience of good working relationships
* Experience of multi‑disciplinary working
* Experience of teaching and supervision of doctors in training
* Experience in forensic psychiatry
* Publications in the field of psychiatry
* Experience of developing services in a constantly changing environment within tight budgetary restraints


Entry Criteria for the grade

* Specialty Registration in specialty CCT in relevant specialty or within 6 months of attainment of Higher Training CCT at time of interview.
* Shall have equivalent experience and competencies recognised by GMC
