Locum specialist doctor in paediatric haematology

We are inviting applications for a part-time, fixed-term (12 months) specialist position in Paediatric Haematology. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and supportive team of senior haematology clinicians (8.1 WTE including this post), providing expert care to children with haematological conditions across the South West.

The successful candidate will become part of a multidisciplinary team of 14 consultants delivering comprehensive paediatric haematology, oncology, stem cell transplant, and long-term follow-up services to the region and beyond.


Main duties of the job

* Lead on the care of patients with haemoglobinopathies, including running dedicated clinics and offering specialist advice to regional colleagues.
* Participate in the benign haematology attending rota during working hours, including consultative services for Bristol and the wider South West.
* Contribute to teaching, perform invasive procedures (e.g. bone marrow aspirates and lumbar punctures), and support leukaemia clinics.
* Please note: This role does not include out-of-hours on-call duties.


Essential Criteria:

* FRCPath, MRCPCH, MRCP or equivalent qualification.
* Minimum of 6 years' experience in paediatric haematology.

Person Specification


Knowledge and Experience

* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in experience in Paediatric Haematology including haemoglobinopathy and malignant haematology.
* Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
* A minimum of 12 years of medical experience since gaining your primary qualification


Skills and Abilities

* Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty
* Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty
* Knowledge and experience of shared care paediatric stem cell transplant service delivery.
* Excellent skills in bone marrow aspiration, trephine biopsy and bone marrow harvest.


Qualifications and Training

* Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
* 6 years experience in haematology

* Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
* Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation
* Positive approach to evidence based practice
* Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation


Research

* Knowledge of the principles involved in research
* Evidence of involvement in research
* Evidence of peer review research papers


Teaching and Training

* Experience of teaching medical students
* Experience of supervising trainees.
* Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team


Management & Leadership

* Evidence of management training and evidence of learning from it
* Ability to cope with and effectively organise the workload of a specialty/specialist doctor
* Ability to take on responsibility and show evidence of leadership
* Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks


Interpersonal, communication and team working skills

* Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, clinical colleagues, support staff and other colleagues.
* Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English.
* Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods, and to respond to questions and queries
* Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi-professional basis with all levels of staff both within and across divisions
* Ability to be a flexible team member
