Financial Accountant
* Job Type: Full-time
* Hourly rate: £23-£30 depending on experience
* Location: Stevenage - hybrid working
We are seeking a dedicated Financial Accountant to provide essential support to the Head of Technical Accounting and the wider technical accounting team. This role is pivotal in ensuring the accuracy and compliance of financial records and reports for the SBC group and related party companies. The successful candidate will be involved in a range of financial duties, from daily treasury operations to the preparation of annual statements of accounts.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities of the Role:
* Provide accounting and technical services for the Statement of Accounts, including managing all revenue accounts, balance sheets, and control accounts.
* Prepare annual statements of accounts for council-owned/part-owned companies, handle filings, VAT, and tax returns, and facilitate transaction postings.
* Monitor and control in-year reconciliations prepared by the reconciliation team.
* Conduct balance sheet reviews to ensure accuracy and correct coding of costs.
* Collate and post rent journals monthly and submit quarterly VAT returns along with the annual partial exemption calculation.
* Support the maintenance of reporting hierarchies within the accounting system and provide financial analysis of suppliers and customers.
* Compile and publish financial transparency data and coordinate the maintenance of the council’s monthly cash flow forecast.
* Provide daily treasury cover and complete statutory returns such as the Whole of Government Accounts.
* Liaise with external audit teams during audits and report any issues to the Head of Technical Accounting.
* Support group companies with financial advice and represent finance at group board meetings.
* Deliver financial training to non-finance staff within the Council.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
* Proven experience in financial accounting, preferably within a local government setting.
* Strong understanding of local government finance and the ability to produce sound financial information.
* Proficiency in using financial software, ideally Integra.
* Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
* Ability to manage multiple tasks and adhere to deadlines.
* Strong communication skills and the ability to liaise effectively with various stakeholders, including external auditors and senior officers.
