Overview
The Haematology department provides a comprehensive clinical and laboratory service for patients across East Kent. The team runs nineteen subspecialised outpatient clinics per week across three sites plus telephone consultations. Haematology and Haemophilia inpatient beds are centralised at Kent and Canterbury Hospital, with outpatient presence and chemotherapy units at the Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother, Margate, and William Harvey, Ashford. The Kent Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre is based at Kent and Canterbury Hospital and acts as the Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre for patients with bleeding disorders in Kent and parts of East Sussex. The specialist Haemophilia Laboratory is based within the Haemophilia Centre at Kent and Canterbury Hospital. Haematology and Haemophilia are part of the Diagnostics, Buckland and Cancer Care group. Role details
This post is a full-time (10 PA) consultant haematologist position and is a replacement following a retirement.
Location: Predominantly Kent and Canterbury site with 1 day per week at William Harvey Hospital, Ashford. The post includes attending weekly multidisciplinary team meetings and participating in 1 in 5 Haemostasis on-call rota. Separate on-call rotas exist for Haemostasis and Haem-oncology/General Haematology (including Ward-attending duties). A full resident doctor on-call rota supports these rotas. We provide training for rotational Haematology trainees from the Kings/KSS training programme.
Responsibilities
* Provide outpatient care, including 3 outpatient clinics per week plus Haemostasis on call.
* Clinics include: 1 Haemophilia & Thrombosis clinic; 1 Immune Cytopenias (ITP; AIHA) clinic; and a Myeloproliferative Neoplasm (MPN) clinic. The post also provides a Haemoglobinopathy clinic once per month and supports the laboratory.
* Provide clinical interpretation of haematological laboratory tests and offer advice to clinical colleagues; provide Haematologist support to the Haematology laboratories.
* Participate in clinical audits and other departmental clinical governance activities, and activities to support appraisal and revalidation.
* May be required to undertake other duties appropriate for a consultant haematologist not otherwise specified.
* Attend weekly MDT meetings and contribute to service development and delivery within the Cancer Care pathway as part of the Diagnostics, Buckland and Cancer Care group.
Qualifications and requirements
* Medical qualification and eligibility for appointment as a consultant haematologist.
* Experience in haemophilia, thrombosis, immune cytopenias, and myeloproliferative neoplasms is implied by clinic responsibilities.
* Commitment to clinical governance, audit, and revalidation processes.
