Job Summary
Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is appointing a Consultant in Anaesthetics with an interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia & digital innovation. The post is offered on a full‑time basis of 10 programmed activities, 8 DCC and 2 SPA, and includes an on‑call commitment at the Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust on a 1:18 basis.
Responsibilities
* Provide training and service for the anaesthetic department, including flexible fixed commitments.
* Participate in a rota that facilitates appropriate consultant leadership and provides on‑call cover at night, weekends and during periods of leave.
* Assist in the provision of services within the SWNS directorate, demonstrating flexibility and co‑operation when required.
* Participate in the directorate's clinical meetings.
* Contribute to professional supervision, management support and teaching of anaesthetic and other trainees within the department.
* Assist in the organisation and participation in teaching sessions for undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff and other health professionals.
* Undertake mentoring and appraisal of trainees.
* Assist in the recruitment of trainee medical staff.
* Provide clinical support to ICU and ED for acutely ill children, and cover general and obstetric emergencies.
Salary and Benefits
Salary: £113,565 to £150,569 per annum pro rata.
Pay scheme: Hospital medical and dental staff.
Grade: Consultant.
Contract: Permanent.

Qualifications
Essential
* On the GMC's specialist register relevant to the post or a Specialist Registrar within six months of admission to the register by the date of interview.
* FRCA or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
* Clinical training and experience in all aspects of anaesthesia.
* Experience in managing paediatric emergencies and completion of training courses such as APLS and PALS.
* Advanced training in obstetric anaesthesia.
* Proven excellent clinical skills and experience.
* Familiarity with the current structure of the health service and recent initiatives and changes.
* Track record of taking responsibility, leading, making decisions and responding appropriately to service needs.
* Attendance at management or leadership courses.
* Proven experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
* Evidence of contribution to effective audit, quality improvement and clinical risk management, particularly in obstetric anaesthesia.
* Understanding of principles and application of clinical research.
Desirable
* Higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD, PhD).
* Track record of adopting new techniques.
* Management of team or programme/project.
* Experience of educational supervision and teaching skills courses leading to a teaching qualification.
* Innovation in teaching and training.
* Quality improvement projects in obstetric anaesthesia.
* Track record of digital innovation projects.
* Relevant research experience.
* Publication of peer-reviewed papers.
* Presentation at national or international meetings.
* Computer skills course or certificate.
* IT skills and computer literacy.
* Empathy, understanding, listening skills, patience and social skills appropriate to different types of client.
* Good interpersonal skills with the ability to cooperate, persuade and negotiate within a senior clinical and management team.
* Awareness of own strengths and weaknesses and ability to deploy them effectively.
