Controls Engineer / PLC Software Engineer

Our client, established for almost 20 years, is a leading provider of hardware and software design, robot systems integration, and commissioning for bespoke automation solutions across the UK. Due to ongoing growth, they are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer / PLC Software Engineer to join their successful software team.
The role involves managing projects at both engineering and client levels, developing technical documents, and creating bespoke software routines to ensure safe and controlled machine/system operation, including safety software compliant with BS-EN13849. Responsibilities include testing and quality checking systems prior to shipping, and commissioning systems at head office and client sites (including occasional overseas visits). The role requires working on-site up to 70% of the time and in the office near Telford for the remainder.
The candidate should be comfortable working autonomously and as part of a team, with a focus on health and safety compliance. Training will be provided as needed.
Essential skills and experience include:
1. Proficiency in Siemens TIA Portal and/or Allen Bradley Studio 5000
2. Strong PLC programming skills using ladder logic, function blocks, routines, and data blocks
3. Experience with HMI development and on-site commissioning of industrial automation systems
4. Knowledge of conveyor control, machine interfaces, sequential logic, safety controllers, drive configuration, and motor control
5. Understanding of Profinet, Ethernet, and Profibus communication systems
Qualifications required:
1. Full UK driving license
2. HND or above in electrical, electromechanical, or controls engineering
3. At least 3 years of relevant experience
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential for technical reports and customer interactions. The role involves UK travel, working under the guidance of project management.
