About the Role
We are urgently seeking a number of Mechanical Design Engineers on a 6‑month contract to be based predominantly on‑site at our Ampthill, Bedfordshire office.
Experience working within the defence industry and with Armoured Fighting Vehicles and associated systems (Survivability, Lethality, Structures, Communications, Sights and Sensors) is considered a strong advantage.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer you will design, prototype and prove high‑integrity components and complex mechanisms for challenging military environments. You will work within a team of engineers and Design Authorities to develop robust, manufacturable solutions that meet design specifications and applicable legislation.
Responsibilities
* Use requirements specifications and a design brief to develop innovative yet robust design solutions that are compliant and fit for purpose.
* Use CREO Parametric CAD to produce both concept and detail designs.
* Produce supporting calculations and analysis to justify design decisions.
* Work with SMEs, Users and Lethality/Physical Design Authorities to develop concept design solutions.
* Collaborate with a team of Design Engineers to develop a single sub‑system design solution.
* Support production drawings and design data pack creation with CAD engineers.
* Present Design Review data packs to Senior Engineers and Governors.
* Assist with prototype production and confirm designs with manufacturing/purchasing teams.
* Perform physical testing and design proving on engineering prototypes.
* Ensure components and assemblies adhere to applicable industry and business standards and programme safety requirements.
Required skills, qualifications and experience
* Proven experience in the design and development of mechanical products.
* Strong defence industry experience with Armoured Fighting Vehicles and associated systems.
* In‑depth working knowledge of CREO CAD software and experience producing designs.
* Experience with Windchill PDM.
* Extensive knowledge of complex mechanism design and principles.
* Ability to perform basic structural and kinematic calculations.
* Proven track record of successful design and product development for use in harsh environments.
