Offer description

A forward-thinking 11–18 secondary school in Sheffield is seeking a dynamic and academically rigorous Lead Teacher of History to play a key role within its Humanities faculty. This is a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious History specialist ready to take on extended responsibility in a school that combines strong pastoral care with rising academic standards. Situated within a diverse and close-knit Sheffield community, the school has built a reputation for calm classrooms, clear behaviour systems and an unwavering commitment to curriculum quality. Humanities subjects are valued highly within the school’s improvement strategy, and History in particular has seen increasing uptake at GCSE and A-Level. The Role This is a classroom-based leadership position with responsibility for supporting curriculum development and driving standards across History. You will: • Teach History across KS3–KS5, delivering engaging and knowledge-rich lessons • Lead on curriculum sequencing and assessment design within History • Support colleagues with subject pedagogy and exam preparation strategies • Analyse performance data to inform targeted intervention planning • Contribute to whole-school literacy and extended writing initiatives • Help shape enrichment opportunities including trips and guest speakers The History curriculum is built around powerful substantive knowledge and disciplinary thinking. Students engage with a broad range of topics, from medieval Britain to twentieth-century global conflict, with an emphasis on source evaluation, structured argument and historical interpretation. The Humanities Faculty The Humanities team is collaborative, reflective and committed to continual improvement. Weekly faculty meetings focus on pedagogy, retrieval practice, exam modelling and developing students’ analytical writing. Facilities and support include: • Dedicated Humanities classrooms located within a central faculty area • Shared planning systems and assessment frameworks • Access to digital archive resources and documentary materials • Strong cross-department literacy collaboration The faculty works closely with pastoral teams to ensure student engagement remains high and barriers to learning are addressed early. The School Culture This Sheffield secondary school is known for its clear routines, strong staff presence and positive student relationships. Behaviour expectations are consistent across departments, enabling teachers to focus on instruction and subject depth. Leadership is visible and supportive, with an emphasis on professional growth rather than excessive administrative burden. Many current middle leaders progressed internally, reflecting the school’s commitment to developing talent. The school benefits from modernised learning spaces, improved communal areas and a well-utilised library that supports reading across the curriculum. About You The successful candidate will: • Hold QTS and a degree in History or a related discipline • Have strong GCSE outcomes and experience teaching across KS3–KS4 (KS5 desirable) • Demonstrate leadership potential or existing middle leadership experience • Be passionate about academic rigour and extended writing • Have the confidence to support and coach colleagues This role would suit an experienced History teacher looking to move into faculty leadership without stepping fully into headship of department. What’s On Offer • Competitive salary with TLR • Structured leadership development and mentoring • A stable and improving school environment • Strong collaboration within Humanities • A school culture built on clarity, ambition and respect This is an excellent opportunity to influence both subject excellence and wider faculty development in a Sheffield secondary that values thoughtful leadership and high academic standards.
