Mechanical Engineer
Location: Horsham
Salary: £35,000 – £45,000
A growing engineering business in the defence sector is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join its multidisciplinary design team. You’ll work on precision electro‑mechanical mechanisms and machinery for harsh environments, contributing from concept through to production.
The Role
Design complex electro‑mechanical mechanisms and precision assemblies.
Perform classical engineering analysis (stress, fatigue, vibration) using hand calculations and simulation tools.
Produce detailed engineering and assembly drawings for manufacture.
Support lab testing and verification to ensure designs meet specification and customer requirements.
Contribute to engineering reports for new product development and failure investigations.
Work closely with electronics, controls and drive engineers to integrate complete systems.
Support production, test and field engineering teams, and assist Sales with technical input for bids and quotations.
Create and modify 3D CAD models and drawings using SolidWorks.Skills & Experience
Essential:
1–2 years’ experience in a mechanical engineering role.
Experience designing complex mechanisms/structures for harsh environments (defence or similar ideal).
Proven track record taking designs from specification and concept through to production.
Ability to analyse loads and design around gear drives, bearings and motors.
Understanding of machining, casting, fabrication and moulding techniques.
SolidWorks 3D CAD experience.
Confident communicating with customers and stakeholders; able to produce clear reports and contribute in design reviews.Desirable:
Experience designing equipment for harsh/mission‑critical environments.
Background in defence, scientific equipment, special‑purpose machinery or high‑end custom engineering.
5+ years’ mechanical engineering experience.
