Purpose of the Job

The post holder will be a clinical expert for the delivery of clinical skills and high‑fidelity simulation for medical undergraduates and C21 North teach‑out students. They will work closely with the medical education team in development, implementation and evaluation of clinical skills, simulation training and assessment within the North Wales Medical School.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

* To assist with the planning and development of clinical skills, virtual reality and clinical simulation suite of the North Wales Medical School.
* Facilitate and deliver a range of clinical skills/simulation training sessions for undergraduate medical students, and other students.
* Work as a simulation/clinical skills tutor to enhance and improve the clinical competency of medical students, ensuring that a high standard of clinical care is maintained.
* To devise, provide, evaluate, and participate in training and education programs to support the development of skills, knowledge and attitude required by medical and other students to ensure the delivery of competent, high quality patient care.
* To support the medical educational leads in the delivery of clinical skills/simulation training and associated assessment processes.
* To help plan, co‑ordinate and administer the running of the Clinical Skills/VR/Simulation suite(s) for undergraduate medical students and others in the practical lab.
* The post-holder will be fully involved in the development of post‑graduate courses in medical education with the University of Bangor and be part of the teaching faculty for the post‑graduate medical education programmes.
* To maintain clinical competencies as part of an agreed programme with the Dean of Medicine.
* To deputise for other staff as appropriate.
* Provide and receive complex information as part of clinical scenarios and skills training to ensure understanding where barriers exist, i.e. medical students' understanding of the application of knowledge to clinical situations.
* To be an active member of a national Clinical Skills Network, keeping up to date with new developments and the sharing of good practice.
* Liaise with other professional colleagues to encourage multi‑disciplinary training and education.
* Co‑ordinate on a regular basis with other School staff regarding the planning, delivery and feedback of clinical skills education and simulation training to undergraduate medical students.
* Establish and maintain good working relationships with all professional groups within the local Health Board.
* It is expected that the post holder will attend external events and meetings and report back on new ideas and practices.
* Promote further educational opportunities in suite promoting the ethos of multi‑disciplinary learning.
* Engage in developing the structure of existing modules and units of study within programmes and using evidence‑based approaches to enhance the impact of teaching/pedagogical methods and innovations as appropriate.
* To conduct cycles of evaluation and research within the clinical sciences component that assess the quality and impact of all used teaching methods and to identify areas of best practice.
* To work independently on key projects assigned to you.
* Ensuring best practice is followed and utilised for the delivery and development of medical education.
* To deliver innovative approaches to clinical skills, including the development of multimedia eLearning resources.
* To contribute to the clinical assessment component of the Medicine programme, including trialling of new stations, station review, logistics, setting up and assisting in the smooth running of clinical assessments and leading on Q&A allocated to you at assessments.


Other Duties and Responsibilities

* In addition to Bangor University's policies, rules and regulations, the post-holder must comply with Cardiff University academic regulations, quality assurance, governance, ethics, IT and relevant local Human Resources policies.
* Candidates must be committed to on‑going professional development and the process of appraisal.
* Work in partnership with colleagues in the School of Medical Sciences, primary and secondary care in North Wales including educational leads, undergraduate departments and clinicians to ensure the requirements of the programme are met.
* The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.
* The post holder will be expected to comply with the University's equality policies and statements, Dignity at Work and Study Policy and the University's Welsh Language Scheme.
* The post holder has a general and legal duty of care in relation to health, safety and wellbeing and must take all reasonable steps to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for him /herself and for other members of staff, students and visitors affected by his/her actions or inactions.

* The post holder must comply with relevant legal and financial policies and procedures and be aware of their responsibilities in terms of the legal requirements of their posts.


Person Specification


Qualifications / Training

* Essential: The post holder should hold a relevant clinical degree (e.g. medicine, nursing) and have specialist training in clinical skill and simulation.
* The post holder will have maintained their own clinical professional development.
* Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCertHE) or equivalent OR Recognised by the HEA as a Fellow / Recognised by Advance HE as a Fellow against Descriptor 2 of the UKPSF (or minimum of 3 years substantial teaching experience for conversion to HEA Fellowship within 3 years of appointment) or equivalent qualification or evidence (e.g, Academy of Medical Educators or similarly recognised professional educator body).


Desirable Qualifications

* ALS/APLS/ATLS/EPLS instructor status.
* Knowledge of medical student education.
* Knowledge of different teaching methodologies.
* The post holder should be willing to undertake, if not already in possession of, a master’s degree in educational clinical practice or similar.


Experience / Knowledge

* Essential: The post-holder should have recent clinical experience in an appropriate position related to simulation and clinical skills.
* Have substantial and significant experience of teaching clinical skills and simulation at undergraduate/postgraduate level, demonstrating teaching innovation in aspects of course development, design and delivery.
* Evidence of good / innovative pedagogic practice.
* Experience of module development and delivery in higher education.
* Experience of supervising undergraduate and postgraduate projects.


Desirable Experience

* Experience of working in a healthcare environment.
* Subject specialist knowledge in medical education.
* Experience in working within a HEI setting.
* Knowledge of relevant Equality & Diversity policies as relating to staff and students within a university framework.


Skills / Abilities

* Essential: Outstanding communication and IT skills, to include the ability to present complex clinical topics clearly and confidently to others, using high level skills and a range of media.
* The ability to provide appropriate pastoral and academic support to students by appreciating the needs of individual learners and their circumstances.
* Ability to demonstrate innovative and exciting approaches to teaching and research.
* Ability to prioritise workload and work to deadlines.
* Ability to work effectively as part of a team and on own initiative.


Desirable Skills

* Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching and research activities of the School.
* Record of contributing to student experience, requirement, and retention.
* Ability to develop and use online teaching materials.
* Evidence of creating inclusive/enabling teaching and learning environments for students.
* Evidence of managing transition within an academic/clinical environment.


Other

* Essential: Knowledge of local socio‑economic population profile.
* Desirable: The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is desirable for this role. If applicants are not able to speak / write in Welsh at present, there are many opportunities to learn if the successful candidate wishes to do so.
