Job Summary
The successful applicant will provide specialist clinical service in General Plastic Surgery and Burns, with a special interest in Hand Surgery, at the St Andrew's Centre, Broomfield Hospital and satellite sites. The role includes conducting and leading clinically relevant research, contributing to clinical audits, and fostering collaboration with local and national university facilities.
Responsibilities
* Deliver total clinical care of referred patients, including patient communication and record keeping.
* Collaborate positively with colleagues, providing effective clinical leadership for the Plastic Surgery Service.
* Participate in out‑of‑hours consultant cover and cover during colleagues’ annual/study leave.
* Undertake regular ward rounds.
* Participate in clinical audit and continuing professional education.
* Supervise, teach, train and develop junior medical staff, nurses, and medical students.
* Assist in establishing and approving training posts for junior medical staff.
* Maintain standards of care for the service, reporting to the Medical Director, Chief Executive, Chairman, and Board of Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust.
* Support the timetable for clinical duties, subject to discussion with the successful candidate.
Qualifications and Experience
* MBBS or equivalent.
* Evidence of completion of specialist training or equivalent.
* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the specialty.
* Comprehensive knowledge of the specialty and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems.
* Good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities, and relationships across the MDT and the multi‑professional team.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for delivering the service without direct supervision.
Teaching Experience
* Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors, and other staff.
* Evidence of teaching activities undertaken as one‑to‑one, small group, anatomical and cadaveric dissections, and lectures to larger groups at regional or national level.
Research / Audit Experience
* Knowledge of the principles of research/audit and ability to interpret and apply clinical research.
* Recent published clinical research in a peer‑reviewed journal.
* Ability to supervise postgraduate research.
Communication Skills
* Excellent written skills.
* Evidence of management experience or training.
* Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist training.
* Ability to manage and lead a department.
Personal Skills
* Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi‑disciplinary basis with all levels of staff.
* Ability to take responsibility and show evidence of leadership.
* Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national level.
Other Requirements
* Ability to travel between Trust sites.
* Own transport (desirable).
Employment Terms
* Contract: Fixed term – 6 months.
* Working pattern: Full‑time.
* Pay scheme: Hospital medical and dental staff.
* Salary: £113,565 to £150,569 per annum (Pro‑Rata for part time).
* Locations: Broomfield and Chelmsford, CM1 7ET, United Kingdom.
