Job Summary:
* Head of Pathology within the VPG Exeter Laboratory
* Serve as a figurehead in Pathology for your laboratory, both within the group and externally (nationally and internationally).
* Deliver a market-leading pathology service, including client education, business development, marketing, projects, and research to enhance service quality.
* Line manage and lead the pathologist group at your designated VPG laboratory, managing relations with external contractors.
* Maintain professional standards by fulfilling CPD requirements.
* Fulfills HR line management requirements.
* Participate in recruitment of employee pathologists and external contractors.
* Be a member of the laboratory's leadership team, contributing to overall strategy.
* This role is approximately 80% Pathology (as a Board Certified Clinical Pathologist) and 20% Head of Pathology duties.
Pathology Responsibilities:
* Work collaboratively to deliver excellent laboratory services from sample reception to pathology reporting.
* Identify opportunities for improvement in productivity, quality, recruitment, and staff performance.
* Ensure compliance with operational policies and procedures.
* Manage resources, rotas, and client relations, including handling complaints.
* Support training and development of Resident Pathologists.
* Support the Laboratory Director and be ultimately responsible for pathology results and reports.
* Handle client feedback and complaints promptly and record resolutions.
Line Management Duties (20% of role):
* Manage performance, conduct, and absence of your pathology team.
* Conduct annual appraisals, set goals, and monitor progress.
* Ensure mandatory training compliance.
* Lead recruitment and oversee team scheduling and workload.
* Participate in strategic planning and decision-making.
* Manage change and improve client satisfaction.
Knowledge, Skills, & Experience:
* RCVS recognised degree in Veterinary Medicine and membership of RCVS.
* At least 4 years of experience as a specialist Pathologist.
* Board certification in Veterinary Pathology (American or European).
* Understanding of animal diseases relevant to testing services.
* Management skills, knowledge of testing principles, and proficiency with computer systems and LIMS.
* Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
* Experience in leadership, QA/QC, and delivering presentations.
* Management or supervisory experience (minimum 2 years) or completed management training.
