Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, dynamic Consultant to join our organisation to work in a substantive position as a Consultant Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatrist. This post is one of two Consultant Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry posts for Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust. This post holder will provide clinical leadership for the Hope Unit - Adolescent in-patient service with a focus on assessment / short stay treatments, utilising an acute care pathway (6-8 week admissions).
Main duties of the job
* Lead the clinical team in a regional service, providing emergency, urgent and elective multi-disciplinary assessment & treatment for adolescent inpatients with complex or enduring mental health problems.
* Take clinical responsibility for all 12 young people who are inpatient on the unit, managing a caseload of clients receiving high intensity input.
* Provide specialist consultation and advice to referring mental health teams (CAMHS, Working Age Adult MH Services), local authorities and CCGs across the Trust footprint & NW, pertaining to young people with complex mental health care needs.
* Adhere to policies & procedures, maintain appropriate clinical records, confidentiality & admin.
* Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, participating in and helping to lead in referral, admission & discharge planning, CPA reviews and handover to borough MH teams, local authorities & commissioners.
* Utilise the Care Programme Approach, The Mental Health Act, The Children Act & The Mental Capacity Act as required.
* Work in partnership with other professionals/agencies involved in the care of young people across departmental & organisational boundaries.
* Lead in medical practice and mental health practice using a clinical governance framework.
* Provide clinical supervision to junior medical staff and contribute to supervision of other practitioners within the department.
* Provide mutual prospective consultant leave cover with the Horizon Unit colleague.

Safeguarding and Governance
* Practice within a clinical governance framework, ensuring Trust policies, procedures and protocols are adhered to.

On-Call Responsibilities
* First response on‑call cover for all mental health specialties through the Borough Psychiatric CT.
* Middle grade CAMHS psychiatric on‑call at Trust‑wide level, shared with Greater Manchester ST rota.
* Third on‑call for emergencies regarding young people up to 16 years on a 1‑in‑17 Trust‑wide rota.
* Successful applicant will join either the borough Adult Consultant Psychiatry on‑call rota (1‑in‑9) or the Trust Child & Adolescent Consultant Psychiatry on‑call rota, with additional remuneration.
Teaching and Training
* Participate in training, teaching and supervision for junior medical staff and other health and social care professionals.
* Opportunities to engage in MRCPsych teaching programme and medical student teaching via the University of Manchester.
* Supervise the Specialty Doctor attached to the Hope Unit.
Audit and Clinical Governance
* Participate in clinical audit regularly and fully engage in clinical governance activities.
* Provide effective input into the Trust’s clinical governance arrangements.
Research
* Participate in research activities in consultation with the CAMHS Clinical Director; the Research Lead is Professor Prathiba Chitsabesan.
Continuing Professional Development
* Attend CPD, join a peer CPD group, and fulfil CPD requirements of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
* Attain and maintain good standing with CPD; Trained study leave and funding provided in line with the Consultant Personal Development Plan.
Job Plans, Appraisal and Review
* Agree a Job Plan under the new Consultant Contract with the CAMHS Clinical Director.
* Annual job plan review and appraisal in line with the new consultant contract and Revalidation requirements.
* Timely bespoke job planning meetings with the Clinical Director if the job plan changes between annual meetings.

Person Specification
* Educational Qualifications (Essential) – Full GMC Registration.
* Educational Qualifications (Desirable) – Published research MRCPsych.
* Professional/Occupational Qualifications (Essential) – Possession of CCT in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry or General Adult Psychiatry, or within 6 months of achieving this, or entry on the GMC Specialist Register; Section 12 Approval under Mental Health Act 183 or eligible for approval.
* Professional/Occupational Qualifications (Desirable) – Other postgraduate degrees (e.g., MSc, MD, MRCP) and experience in using the Mental Health Act (1983).
* Job Training (Essential) – Evidence of possession of competencies as laid out within the PMETB higher training curriculum for Child & Adolescent Psychiatry or General Adult Psychiatry.
