National Highways currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Advisor to join our Carbon and Climate Team, within the Environmental Sustainability Division. As a Senior Climate Advisor you will act as a source of climate expertise considering how climate change will impact the strategic road network and planning long term improvements including adaptation and resilience.

Working across the company you will be responsible for providing specialist advice to Major Projects and Operations Directorates to support delivery of an ambitious programme to ensure our network is future proofed for climate change in line with our Net Zero Plan and ARP4.

You will also be responsible for providing advice on climate change, adaptation and resilience including supporting the development of standards and assurance processes, ensuring appropriate and timely advice to projects on assessment methodologies and outcomes.

Please note this is a hybrid position and can be based from any of our UK offices however travel to Birmingham to attend team meetings may be required.

What you’ll be leading on

* Be the subject matter expertise on climate change, adaptation and resilience. Providing accurate, practical and timely specialist advice to National Highways, with a focus on increasing climate resilience across our network and projects, fulfilling Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) requirements.
* Ensure alignment between organisational strategies, including the Net Zero Plan, ARP4, Asset Management Strategy, and the Environmental Sustainability Strategy. Including their implementation programmes and reporting ARP5, TCFD, NZP etc.
* Support internal and external stakeholders’ engagement to understand business needs, promoting and gaining commitment to a multi-RIS plan for Climate Adaptation and Resilience, identifying key areas for improvement and sharing best practices.
* Represent National Highways on climate change related technical committees, steering groups, conferences, seminars and workshops to ensure that National Highways views are appropriately represented.
* Establish processes for reviewing the quality of climate and carbon submissions in scheme assessments and funding submissions – including environmental impact assessments, designated funds and investment decision submissions. Developing and maintaining robust data management system to collate, analyse and assure assessments.

About you.

* Excellent communicator with ability to clarify and ensure understanding of project strategies and solutions.
* Excellent collaboration skills with ability to gain the involvement and engagement of a wide range of stakeholders.
* Full membership of (or working towards) a relevant professional institution (i.e. IEMA, CEng, IEng, MICE, or IStructE) and/or relevant qualifications.
* Experience and application of expertise in the following areas: the principles of climate change, resilience and adaptation and its inclusion within policy, procedures, and standards (essential)
* A broad understanding of adoption pathways for transport and linear infrastructure (essential).
* A robust understanding of carbon data, assessment and assurance is desirable.

External candidates will be offered a starting salary at the lower end of the pay scale, while current employees will be appointed in accordance with our established pay policy.
