Offer description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a substantive Specialist Doctor post within NHS Lanarkshire. This senior SAS role is based across University Hospital Hairmyres and University Hospital Monklands and is offered on a full-time 10PA basis, with no on-call or out-of-hours commitment. Applications are welcomed from candidates seeking less than full-time arrangements.

This post is intended for a senior clinician who is already working independently in their practice. The successful candidate will hold full clinical responsibility for the assessment and management of both new and return patients. This includes interpreting diagnostic results, initiating and acting on investigations, and making treatment decisions—including in non-standard and complex cases. The role also encompasses the management of complications and toxicities, with the expectation of autonomous decision-making throughout the patient pathway.

While working within a consultant-led team, the postholder will be expected to function as an independent practitioner, contributing to the delivery of high-quality care and supporting the development of services through clinical leadership and innovation. NHS Lanarkshire recognises and values the expertise of senior SAS doctors and is committed to providing opportunities that reflect their advanced clinical capabilities.

This is a chance to join a motivated and progressive multidisciplinary team, with scope to shape service delivery and contribute to ongoing improvement work. The role can be tailored to individual strengths and interests, and there is strong support for professional development and leadership.

Proposals for additional SPA time from applicants are encouraged. In addition to the 1 PA for Non-DCC/SPA activities, the Board is supportive of applications for additional SPA time from individuals with well-developed ideas for improving services who are able to demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement, patient safety (including human factors training), Medical Education, Research & Development, acting as an Appraiser, etc. Applicants who are able to demonstrate a commitment to any of the above or other areas and wishing to commence on more than 1 PA for SPA duties should discuss proposals with the identified Recruitment Lead and/or Service Manager who will consider the request in line with the successful candidate’s professional and service requirements.

We welcome applications from clinicians who are confident in their autonomous practice and committed to delivering safe, effective, and person-centred care.

Informal enquiries regarding this post will be welcomed by Mrs Lynn Mack, Director Patient Access & Diagnostics lynn.mack@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk and Mrs Kerry Paterson, Service Manager Haematology & Cancer Services kerry.paterson@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk
