Apply for the Senior Scientist role at National Physical Laboratory (NPL)
The world-leading Time & Frequency department seeks an experienced and practicing Senior Scientist / Engineer.
About the Role
You will join our team during an exciting time: maintaining the UK's National Time Scale, UTC (NPL), and developing the UK's first resilient Time Scale facility for Critical National Infrastructure. This addresses risks due to Global Navigation Satellite Systems such as GPS that can be vulnerable to interference.
As Senior Scientist / Engineer, you join a multi-disciplinary team in the National Timing Centre to develop novel Time and Frequency systems and support the UK's Robust Time Scale. You'll have a pivotal role in creating robust systems for time and frequency measurement based on atomic clocks at several UK sites.
Opportunities exist to work on other timing-related projects, e.g., collaborating with the European Space Agency.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead a team of scientists and engineers to deliver high-quality project outputs on time, within quality and cost parameters.
* Design and implement hardware and software for state-of-the-art Time and Frequency measurement systems, including atomic clocks.
* Collaborate with subject-matter experts worldwide to develop novel solutions.
* Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to determine needs and tailor expert solutions.
* Attend international conferences to stay abreast of the latest developments.
About You
Reporting to a Principal Scientist, you'll play a pivotal role in designing critical UK infrastructure that pushes the boundaries of measurement accuracy for the UK's new resilient Time Scale.
Qualifications
* Experience in Time and Frequency measurement/Time scales.
* Postgraduate degree or equivalent experience in physics, astronomy or relevant engineering fields such as satellite navigation systems (GNSS), Satcom, communications or systems engineering.
