Clerk of works
Posted: 16 April
Offer description

INTERNAL APPLICANTS MUST APPLY VIA MYSELF

NLC9 £36, - £42, (effective from 01 April )

North Lanarkshire Council is one of Scotland’s largest local authorities and is delivering ambitious programmes to improve and regenerate its housing stock and the communities around it. To support this work, we are recruiting three Clerk of Works. This includes two full time posts and one part time post. These roles will sit within our multi-disciplinary design and project management team.

Our Clerk of Works play a central role in monitoring the delivery of our investment and regeneration programmes, making sure our projects are delivered to the highest standards.

NLC’s housing stock is one of the council’s most valuable assets. Maintaining these homes to a high standard is essential for meeting statutory obligations and supporting the council’s priorities for safe, warm and sustainable homes.

The team is leading several large scale and innovative programmes including:

1. Enhancing fire safety across our 36 tower blocks including new fire doors, smoke detection and sprinkler systems.
2. Planning and delivering the long term demolition of our 36 tower blocks over the next 25 years.
3. Upgrading existing retirement accommodation to the new Retirement Plus Standard with dementia friendly design.
4. Energy efficiency and renovation programmes.
5. Large scale electrical and communications upgrade projects.

As a Clerk of Works you will be on the frontline helping to deliver these programmes. You will play a key role bridging the design team and the onsite delivery team.

We are looking for candidates who can bring strong technical experience from specialist backgrounds. One post will focus on demolition projects, one on electrical and communications work and one on fire safety. Applicants with experience in the inspection or delivery of these types of works, whether through active or passive fire safety systems, large scale demolition, or electrical and communications projects, will be well suited to the roles and will help support high quality delivery across these complex programmes.

To be considered, applicants must hold an SVQ Level 3, HNC, Apprenticeship or equivalent in a building related discipline. Membership, or a willingness to work towards membership, of professional bodies such as the Institute of Clerk of Works, the Institution of Fire Engineers or the Institute of Fire Safety Managers is desirable.

The role involves extensive time on site, observing construction activities, monitoring progress and ensuring that all work complies with approved designs, technical standards and safety requirements. You will be a vital link between the design team and contractors, providing clear and practical technical advice while helping to resolve any issues that arise during construction. Accurate site records, regular reporting and early identification of risks will form an important part of the role, and your contribution will support quality, safety and compliance across all projects, particularly within demolition, electrical works and fire safety.

You should be a strong communicator with sound knowledge of current Building Regulations and Health and Safety legislation. Experience working within a local authority environment is highly desirable, especially in refurbishment programmes and large-scale capital investment projects.

The role requires travel across North Lanarkshire.

A Disclosure Scotland Level 1 check will be carried out in advance of commencement in post.

Work pattern:

1 post - 17.5 hours per week working alternative Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays.

2 posts - 35 hours per week - Monday - Thursday: 08:45am - 16:45pm (including a 55 minute unpaid break)

Friday: 08:45am - 16:15pm (including a 50 minute unpaid break)
