Offer description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time, permanent position in the Clinical Support Team at the Christie Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) Centre in Withington, Manchester. The role of the Clinical Support Worker (CSW) involves a varied range of duties incorporating both clerical and clinical skills, supporting the patient and the service throughout their course of treatment with PBT. Working with patients on a daily basis, the CSW is responsible for supportive duties alongside radiographers in treatment and imaging, as well as clerical and administrative work. Some experience in healthcare is preferable but not essential; training will be provided for this highly specialised role.

Working shifts cover the needs of the service. Example shifts include 7am‑3pm and 11am‑7pm, which may vary depending on the work area. The position is permanent, 37.5hrs over 5 days.


Key Responsibilities

* Assist the clinical teams in supporting patients while they are receiving treatment, including assisting radiographers in the production, management and maintenance of radiotherapy immobilisation devices;
* Liaise with patients on a daily basis, building rapport and feeding back important information to the clinical team;
* Perform clinical duties such as changing dressings, capturing and recording of patient clinical observations;
* Complete a range of administrative duties using Trust systems to capture and record information, track and maintain patient records;
* Provide support to the department by ensuring accurate recording of treatment and planning data, organising and scheduling patient appointments, greeting and escorting patients, and assisting with appointment queries;
* Support radiotherapy staff with the physical, clinical and emotional needs of patients, including care of postoperative patients, changing dressings, tracheostomy support, and working with patients that have communication difficulties;
* Liaise between all Christie radiotherapy centres, host sites and community when appropriate;
* Use knowledge of the integrated clinical information system for case note tracking and collating data for referrals, data input and radiotherapy completion tasks, and retrieval of medical documents from other Trusts;
* Comply with policies, procedures, rules, regulations and departmental protocols;
* Produce suitable immobilisation equipment and provide clinical support for radiotherapy anaesthetic and recovery areas;
* Work under the direction of PBT radiographers to undertake routine and specifically identified tasks after training and competency completion;
* Maintain accurate patient details in all Christie patient systems, following correct procedures for recording information and ensuring data protection compliance;
* Triage and manage booking forms, book and schedule radiotherapy planning and treatment across all sites, arrange patient transport, and schedule physiotherapy and complementary therapy;
* Produce departmental statistics, ensure submission within deadlines, use analytical skills to judge patient situations and decide when issues need escalation;
* Cover the reception desk as needed and answer internal or external telephone calls;
* Control stock, produce and process completion letters, create follow‑up letters, support pre‑treatment imaging and prepare patients for diagnostic procedures;
* Provide continuity of support during absences of other CSWs and booking team members;
* Support all Christie clinics, including AHP services, and organise relevant medical equipment, including sterilisation;
* Utilise own initiative within defined SOPs, procedures and policies, seeking guidance when unsure;
* Assist with patient transfer and manual handling tasks as required;
* Attend all relevant mandatory training courses, maintain personal development, participate in training, meetings and work at The Christie Withington site and satellite sites;
* Assist in the training and orientation of other CSWs and students, complete the Christie Care Certificate as mandated, and demonstrate tasks to new members.


Skills and Experience

* Excellent communication skills, able to support patients and carers of all ages, including a large number of paediatric patients and families travelling from all over the UK;
* Strong teamwork ethic, willingness to interact with a range of professions;
* Good IT skills and willingness to learn multiple Trust IT systems;
* Flexibility to adapt to evolving workloads and shift patterns;
* Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and all shift patterns if required.
