Reporting to the Fleet Manager, the Superintendent will be responsible for ensuring all company vessels under their control are maintained in a safe and seaworthy condition in accordance with the requirements/instructions issued by the client, the company’s senior management, flag state administrations, and classification societies.
Key Responsibilities
* Ensuring managed vessels are operated efficiently to required standards to minimise downtime and maintain the client’s assets.
* Ensuring that all ship operations, shipboard activities, the standard of maintenance, vessel appearance, and décor are to the standards required by the client and the company.
* Acting as the principal point of contact between ship and shore-based staff.
* Auditing the day-to-day technical running of the vessels managed by the company under their control.
* Providing advice to vessel staff and company management within their area of expertise.
* Monitoring vessels under their control to ensure all statutory requirements concerning certification, safe manning, safety procedures, plant, and machinery are complied with and ensuring appropriate records are maintained, liaising with and making notifications to classification societies, flag administrations, etc., as necessary.
* Reviewing the vessel’s monthly return of the SFOPS 19 – Survey Report to ensure accurate reporting. Responsible for dealing with surveys, arranging extensions, etc., considering trading patterns and future voyage prospects to maintain certificate validity.
* Responding to safety committee meeting minutes.
* Liaising with ship personnel to ensure operational procedures are carried out safely and efficiently.
* Monitoring planned maintenance systems.
* Maintaining familiarity with all company rules and operating manuals to advise ship’s staff and lead casualty response as required.
* Monitoring and inspecting logbooks, abstracts, and periodic returns submitted by vessels.
* Advising the fleet manager on operational issues and ship management difficulties.
* Conducting periodic ship visits, inspections, and drills with appropriate reporting.
* Auditing vessels as required by the management system.
* Maintaining documentation and technical bulletins for safe vessel operation.
* Ensuring day-to-day manning of vessels with competent staff.
* Coordinating services for ship operation, including port services, agents, bunkering, etc.
* Assisting in preparing annual operating cost budgets and ensuring accurate cost predictions.
* Preparing budgets and specifications for dry-docking and repairs, liaising with clients, and supervising shipyard activities.
* Verifying and authorizing quotations for spares, supplies, and services.
* Monitoring vessel expenditure for financial reporting.
* Assisting in insurance claim reports and submissions.
* Interviewing senior officers and participating in appraisals.
* Providing cover for the fleet manager as needed.
* Liaising with departments supporting vessels.
* Interviewing recruits as requested.
* Occasional travel may be required.
* Performing other relevant tasks as assigned.
Candidate Requirements
* Qualifications as a key management team member, at least second engineer or chief officer.
* At sea experience as part of the onboard management team.
* Onshore experience in shipping operations.
* Knowledge of ISM/ISPS/MLC standards.
* Vessel operations, technical, and safety procedures expertise, especially in chemical, oil, or gas tanker operations.
* Financial knowledge for budgeting and cost control.
* Unlimited Chief Engineer or Master Mariners Certificate of Competency (STCW II/2).
* Degree in marine engineering or nautical science.
* Sailing experience as chief engineer or master.
