Location and Ways of Working
We follow the principle of “Locate for your Day”, which means that we expect people to use their own judgment to decide the best place to work to meet the needs of the business.
The majority of our roles can be performed predominantly remotely, however, we are not a fully remote organisation as we recognise the importance of face-to-face connection, so you will be expected to spend some time in the office.
We operate from our Global Hub at Victoria Square House in Birmingham and maintain a small presence in Central London.
Our Global Hub is located in Birmingham, which is our primary location, however, many of our employees are located across the UK. Therefore, working in another location may be required on occasion. You will be expected to commute to your usual place (Birmingham) of work at your own cost and any requests for you to travel further will be compensated.
Main purpose of the role
The Data & Analytics (D&A)team is at the heart of VisitBritain/VisitEngland's ambition to be a data‑led organisation. This Data Engineer role sits within a structured, governance‑first delivery model that is building and scaling the organisation’s Azure‑based data platform.
This post is specifically aligned to a government data collection and reporting programme. The programme involves integrating sensitive third‑party datasets, delivering analytical outputs to support statutory reporting obligations, and ensuring full compliance with data governance and GDPR requirements.
The Data Engineer will be responsible for designing and building the data pipelines, layered architecture, and integration patterns that underpin this programme, working within the D&A team's established platform standards. You will report into the Data Scientist and operate within a delivery team that includes a Data BA and BI Developer.
Key platform standards you will be expected to work within include:
* Unity Catalog for data governance and access control.
* Layered medallion architecture: Sourced, Cleansed, Conformed, and Derived layers.
* Azure DevOps for CI/CD, version control, and peer review workflows.
* Coding standards and peer review processes mandated by the D&A team.
