Senior Biomedical Scientist

Overview

An experienced, suitably qualified HCPC registered Band 7 Specialist Biomedical Scientist is required to cover maternity leave within the Specialist Coagulation Laboratory (Blood Sciences). The position is primarily based at the Royal Liverpool site, with flexibility to support coagulation services at other sites. Working outside routine hours may be required to meet service demands.

The role demands high analytical and technical skill, including statistical and quality analysis, and up‑to‑date knowledge of current practices in Haematology. Experience in Haemostasis and Thrombosis is desirable.


Job Responsibilities

* Deputise for the Laboratory Manager in their absence.
* Supervise and allocate staff and workloads to ensure service continuity.
* Ensure compliance with Health and Safety protocols for lower grade staff.
* Write, review and implement standard operating procedures for laboratory analyses and equipment.
* Provide for the regional Haemophilia out‑of‑hours service when the Laboratory Manager is absent.
* Evaluate new equipment and make procurement recommendations.
* Participate in weekly Haemostasis meetings.
* Review and implement departmental procedures.
* Ensure internal and external quality control procedures are met and address QC failures.
* Manage stocks, consumables and material orders.
* Communicate essential information to the Laboratory Manager to maintain service provision.
* Assist the Laboratory Manager with personnel issues.
* Build upon and maintain specialist technical and analytical knowledge.
* Maintain HCPC registration by complying with standards of proficiency and conduct.
* Ensure compliance with local, national and international standards of work practice (e.g., ISO).
* Maintain expertise necessary to perform specialised procedures independently.
* Report and explain results to clinicians and service users.
* Provide specialist advice on specimen types, investigations, test appropriateness, and turnaround times.
* Manage conflicting priorities to ensure service targets are met.
* Handle liaison with colleagues, other healthcare professionals and external organisations sympathetically.
* Use empathy to overcome technical, clinical and linguistic barriers.
* Assess suitability of received samples and liaise with medical staff.
* Negotiate with service users to resolve contentious issues affecting laboratory targets.
* Provide advice and guidance to students, trainees and newly qualified Biomedical Scientists.
* Authorise attendance of company engineers for equipment maintenance.
* Coordinate with IT support to resolve computer system difficulties.
* Assess suitability of samples and liaise with medical staff as necessary.
* Analyze blood and other body fluids using automated, semi‑automated and manual techniques.
* Ensure data integrity when entering patient demographics and results into the LIS.
* Troubleshoot, repair and maintain analysers and equipment, and liaise with engineers.
* Process and report haemostasis quality control materials accurately and precisely.
* Authorise test results and initiate further tests when appropriate.
* Validate colleagues’ work as necessary.
* Ensure timely, accurate and precise reporting of haemostasis results.
* Inform medical staff of any untoward or unexpected results that could harm the patient.
* Maintain accurate and consistent test results using internal and external quality assurance.
* Institute new techniques and evaluate new reagents to improve diagnosis of haemostatic defects.
* Participate in the Directorate audit program and act on findings.
* Monitor new reagents to identify cost‑saving opportunities.
* Assist in training scientific and support staff in haemostasis techniques, including tutorials.
* Participate in induction and training of new clinical and technical staff.
* Supervise projects for pre‑ and post‑professional qualifications.


Qualifications

* HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist (BMS) with BSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.
* FIBMS or MSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.


Experience

* Extensive experience in Haematology with evidence of relevant post experience.
* Out‑of‑hours working experience in a medical laboratory.
* Ability to work to high standards and meet demanding deadlines.
* Training experience in a laboratory setting.


Knowledge

* Health and Safety awareness.
* Attendance at subject‑related seminars, workshops and conferences.


Skills

* Good interpersonal and organisational skills.
* Strong time‑keeping and management abilities.
* Demonstrated leadership skills.
