Training Scheme
The 4‑5 year Graduate Training Scheme is a structured, hands‑on programme that spans a wide range of teams and provides the skills, experience, and opportunities to become future leaders within the Environment Agency.
Placements
* 6‑12 month rotations across asset management, strategic planning, site supervision, modelling, forecasting, natural flood management, national fisheries service, and health and safety.
* Exposure to a holistic understanding of flood defence engineering projects and a network of specialists across related fields.
Pathways
Your journey is tailored to your interests and development needs. Choose topics such as geotechnics, hydraulics, or engineering project logistics and find the right combination of learning opportunities.
Learning & Development
Accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the programme guides you toward Incorporated (IEng) and Chartered (CEng) status.
Team & Support
A dedicated team of Professional Development Advisors coordinates a large community of Supervising Civil Engineers, Delegated Engineers, Career Mentors, and peer support groups to nurture engineering talent and facilitate a busy calendar of collaborative learning opportunities.
Experience / Skills Required
* Graduate with an accredited BEng or, ideally, an MEng degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
* Both your BEng and Masters must be accredited by ICE to satisfy the academic requirements of becoming either an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer.
* Proactive, adaptable, self‑motivated with a keen interest in collaboration and stakeholder engagement.

Timeline
Shortlisting will take place in January 2026 with interviews in February/March 2026. Successful candidates start in September 2026.
Compensation
Pay Step 2 (£31,452) for BEng graduates; Pay Step 3 (£32,237) for MEng (or equivalent) graduates.
Driving Licence
Successful candidates are required to hold or acquire a full UK driving licence within six months of starting the role.
