Overview

An Acute Oncology Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) role at University Hospitals Sussex, primarily within Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) to support ambulatory management of cancer patients presenting with complications and/or toxicities from cancer or treatment. The ACP will help improve admission pathway efficiency by developing new SDEC pathways to reduce attendance of cancer patients at the emergency department. The role also includes service development, research and audit. The ACP will demonstrate in-depth knowledge and competence in cancer-related emergency presentations, cancer treatments and associated side effects.

Responsibilities

* Explore and initiate innovative collaborative approaches with the multi-disciplinary team to continuously improve care for emergency cancer patients.
* Support practice and in-business continuity at an advanced, highly specialist level with in-depth knowledge and competence in cancer care, including advanced assessment and evidence-based clinical management.
* Demonstrate high levels of interpersonal and specialist technical skills in managing teams and collaborating with other ACPs for patients with Acute Oncology needs.
* Discuss and reflect on complex case management, providing expert advice on investigations and treatments required during emergency admissions.
* Use advanced communication skills to manage the Acute Oncology team and deliver complex information to patients and carers to aid understanding and decision making.
* Collaborate with nurses and AHPs in general ward areas to support educational needs and skill development, particularly when communicating sensitive issues.
* Assessment and management of patients presenting with toxicities or complications of cancer or treatment in SDEC and SACT units.
* Provide availability to the multi-disciplinary team to offer expert advice on Acute Oncology matters; lead and support coordination of the patient journey and maintain high standards of written and verbal advice to patients, relatives, carers, the MDT and external stakeholders.
* Act as a change agent to introduce evidence-based practice, align with national and local policies, and implement these into local specialist practice.
* Provide support for Acute Oncology CNS teams across all four sites, offering specialist clinical advice and assisting in their development and training.
* Utilise national and local policies and initiatives to influence patient care and implement changes into local practice; develop and implement updates to policies and guidelines in the field of Acute Oncology.
* Work with Cancer Networks to progress the complex acute oncology agenda; initiate and lead the audit agenda and robust data collection; support and lead on education within oncology and the wider AHP and medical workforce.


Qualifications

* Current UK NMC registration (or equivalent as applicable).
* Experience in acute oncology or emergency cancer care preferred.
* Evidence of post-qualification experience in advanced clinical practice and having a proven track record in service development, research and audit.
* Willingness to engage in education and development within the wider oncology and AHP/medical workforce.
