Overview
The post holder is responsible for the continuing management of the patients and/or staff within their clinical setting, without supervision alongside their team lead and taking the chain of command in the absence of their team lead. This includes assessment of care needs, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, setting and maintaining standards, and supervision and deployment of staff where appropriate. The post holder will facilitate educational programmes for basic, post basic and in-service training in close liaison with the Learning and Development Team. They will work with the senior team member to facilitate patient‑focused, innovative, research‑based practice in line with Surrey Downs Health and Care objectives and act as a role model within the team with lead responsibilities and skilled nursing care planning for patients and families/carers.
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage clinical care in the absence of the team lead, ensuring appropriate staffing and skill mix and deputising as required.
* Facilitate and participate in educational programmes for all levels of staff, in liaison with the Learning and Development Team to maintain competencies.
* Promote nursing research and project work within the clinical area to support high quality care and encourage skill diversification, maintaining professional and clinical integrity in line with NMC guidelines.
* Treat all patients with privacy and dignity, supporting and informing family/carers where appropriate; promote health and wellbeing of patients.
* Ensure continuity of care across clinical settings through timely planning and effective communication; maintain timely data entry and support others in data entry; maintain clear, signed, contemporaneous records per procedures.
* Ensure adherence to policies, procedures and standards of care at all times; support clinical supervision processes and conduct monthly one‑to‑ones and appraisals as part of team development.
* Support the team lead with delegated tasks and duties to meet service needs; plan, participate in and evaluate teaching programmes for all levels of staff with the team lead and Learning and Development Team to ensure competencies are maintained.
* Identify staff training and development needs, foster a good clinical learning environment, act as an assessor and mentor to qualified and unqualified staff, and be the main support network for new team members.
* Manage budget and ensure economical use of resources; monitor consumables and approve off‑formulary requests as appropriate; participate in recruitment and selection when required.
* Facilitate a multidisciplinary approach to care, chair team meetings in the absence of the team lead, and forward minutes to absent team members to ensure briefings.
* Be aware of safeguarding procedures, liaise with safeguarding teams and social services, and support other team members in safeguarding processes.
* Participate in the Clinical Governance Strategy, facilitate clinical audits and monitoring of care; support Datix investigations and rapid response reviews as applicable.
* Participate in the Risk Management Strategy, ensure processes are followed and report any identified risks to the team lead or operational manager.
* Undertake other duties consistent with the post as required and be prepared for temporary or permanent relocation within Surrey Downs Health and Care localities as service needs dictate.

Shift patterns
Please note this post will require the post holder to work shifts in line with ward patterns, including long shifts (07:30–20:30 or 20:00–08:00) and short days (07:30–15:30 or 12:30–20:30) over a 7‑day week, including day and night shifts. Working nights helps provide experienced clinical leadership, supervision and support for junior staff and students.
