Ophthalmology Outpatient Department - Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse
The Ophthalmology Outpatient Department has a vacancy for a full-time Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse with at least 2 years of current nursing care experience in an elective, trauma, or outpatient ophthalmology setting. The post is available full time - 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. The shift pattern currently involves four long days (8-6pm three days per week and one shift of 8.30-6.00pm).
The post holder will act as a positive role model, promote effective teamwork, and encourage continuous development within the department. Alongside the Senior Sister, responsibilities include assessing patient care needs, developing, implementing, and evaluating care programmes. The post holder will support performance management of the nursing team and facilitate staff education and development in their clinical practice within the clinic environment.
The post holder is also expected to undertake expanded practice competencies to become a practitioner in our intravitreal injection service, addressing increasing treatment demands for eye conditions such as diabetic macular oedema, retinal vein occlusion, and age-related macular degeneration. Informal visits are encouraged to understand this role as part of the application process.
In the absence of the Senior Sister, the post holder will take overall responsibility for all patients in the department, ensuring appropriate assessment, management plans, and high-quality, compassionate care. The post holder will regularly take charge of the department, supervise others, and evaluate patient care.
