Job Title: Chairman of the Lord Mayor’s Charity
Reports to: Board of Trustees
Term: 3 years, reviewed annually.
Location: Birmingham
Time Commitment: 6 board meetings per annum plus occasional events
Role Summary:
The Chairman of the Lord Mayor’s Charity leads the Board of Trustees in fulfilling its governance responsibilities, ensuring the charity meets its objectives, operates within its legal and financial framework, and maintains high standards of integrity, transparency, and impact. As a key ambassador, the Chairman supports the Lord Mayor in promoting the charity, building relationships with key stakeholders, and ensuring the success of fundraising and awareness campaigns and is a voluntary role.
Key Responsibilities:
Governance and Leadership
* Provide leadership to the Board of Trustees in developing and fulfilling the charity's mission.
* Chair board meetings effectively, encouraging open and constructive discussion.
* Ensure the board fulfils its duties in legal compliance, strategic direction, and financial oversight.
* Facilitate annual reviews of board performance and charity effectiveness.
Strategic Oversight
* Work with trustees and staff to set and review the charity’s strategic plan.
* Monitor progress towards strategic objectives, ensuring delivery aligns with the charity’s mission and values.
* Support risk management processes and ensure appropriate internal controls are in place.
Representation and Advocacy
* Act as a key figurehead and ambassador for the charity at public functions, media opportunities, and civic events.
* Work closely with the Lord Mayor to align charitable initiatives with civic priorities.
* Build and maintain relationships with donors, sponsors, community leaders, and partner organisations.
Fundraising and Promotion
* Support the planning and execution of high-profile fundraising campaigns and events.
* Help to secure sponsorships and partnerships that support the charity’s objectives.
* Promote the charity’s work and enhance its profile in the community and beyond.
Support to the Lord Mayor
* Work collaboratively with the Lord Mayor to support their chosen themes and initiatives.
* Ensure a smooth handover and continuity of charitable objectives with each incoming Lord Mayor.
Person Specification:
Essential:
* Demonstrated leadership experience, ideally at board level.
* Strong commitment to charitable work and civic engagement.
* Excellent communication, influencing, and networking skills.
* Ability to build consensus and manage diverse stakeholder relationships.
* Understanding of charity governance and fundraising principles.
Desirable:
* Prior involvement in a civic or ceremonial role.
* Experience in high-profile public engagement or event hosting.
* Knowledge of the local community and its key institutions.
