Position Summary
The VIMS Coastal Geology Lab ( CGL ) Laboratory Manager assists in the operation of research projects associated with the CGL and associated Sedimentology & Gamma Geochronology Cost Center.
The Laboratory Manager assists in the operation of research projects associated with the VIMS Coastal Geology Lab. Associated responsibilities include:
* Manage and oversee all activities of the Sedimentology & Gamma Geochronology Cost Center associated with the analysis of short-lived radioisotopes. This includes all contracting, invoicing, communication with VIMS and external collaborators and customers, sample preparation and analysis, data analysis, report writing, purchasing of supplies, and equipment maintenance.
* Organize and complete contract work for VIMS and external collaborators in association with the Sedimentology & Gamma Geochronology Cost Center. This may include core or sample collection and processing, laboratory analyses, and report writing.
* Assist with the collection and processing of field and lab coastal geologic data. Field data may include ground-penetrating radar, sediment cores and samples, process-based data, and topographic measurements from beach, dune, shoreface, lagoon, and backbarrier marsh environments from diverse coastal settings. Lab data include collection and processing of sediment cores, sediment samples, and marsh samples.
* Assist with organization of field and lab data-collection logistics. This includes completion of purchasing and ordering of all supplies needed for lab operation, and assistance of students with such purchases. This also includes arranging for field logistics (e.g., vehicles, housing, and food), obtaining permissions from external agencies, and interfacing with external collaborators.
* Manage normal operations, equipment usage and maintenance, and lab organization in Department of Physical Sciences’ Sedimentology, Coastal Geology, and Radiocarbon Preparation laboratories.
* Completion of routine maintenance, repair, and supplying of field and laboratory equipment. This specifically includes equipment such as all gamma detectors, a laser diffraction particle size analyzer ( LDPSA ), CamSizer, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), vibracore system, Geoprobe and associated trailer and small engines, ground-penetrating radar ( GPR ), and routine Sedimentology Lab equipment, and all associated peripherals.
* Analyze data generated from analyses and processes and integrate with publication-ready databases.
* Assist with writing and drafting figures, graphs, and tables for publication. Manage databases and prepare data for submission to online data repositories. Submission of data to online repositories as needed.
* Mentor and train undergraduate, graduate, and guest students in lab and field operations.
* Participate in and assist in organizational logistics for lab and scientific meetings.
Conditions of Employment
* This is a full-time position, contingent upon external grant funding. This is a restricted position subject to the availability of funding.
* This position may require weekend work and travel and may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc., as directed and approved by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications
Education:
* Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in STEM field, with emphasis in geological, marine, or environmental sciences.
* Some college course work in sedimentology, coastal geology, marine science, GIS, or other related courses.
* Knowledge of appropriate sediment laboratory techniques and procedures with the ability to collect and process sediment cores and samples.
* Basic familiarity with field techniques including direct-push drill rig operation, vibracoring, augering, surface sampling, and ground penetrating radar.
* Proficiency with software applications, including Microsoft office and basic use of ESRI ArcGIS and other software tools for data analysis.
* Familiarity with data management to include data collection, and the ability to maintain and analyze data.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with all level of staff & faculty, as well as work collaboratively as part of a team.
* Strong organizational skills.
* Demonstrated experience in project management and experience in teaching lab techniques to others.
* Experience with either (1) drone surveying, (2) short-lived radioisotope (Pb, Cs) analysis, and/or (3) laboratory sediment analysis.
* Experience using basic laboratory procedures and utilizing field equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
Education:
* Master’s degree in STEM field, with emphasis in geological, marine, or environmental sciences.
* Working knowledge of gamma counters and experience analyzing samples and data for short-lived radioisotopes.
* Holds or demonstrates interest in obtaining, a FAA license for operating UAVs (drones)
* Knowledge of BuyWM or similar enterprise purchasing systems.
* Proficiency with software including Adobe Illustrator, Matlab, R
* Strong writing skills, with the ability to assist in technical writing.
* Intermediate/advanced demonstrated skills ESRI ArcGIS for mapping and data analysis.
Experience:
* Experience with tracking lab supplies and purchasing.
* Experience using and ground penetrating radar and post-processing data.
* Experience using RTK and post- processing data.
* Experience with database management, to include analyzing data.
* Experience writing technical memos, SOPs and documents for publication, including figure and table creation.
* Experience mentoring and / or training students in lab and field techniques.
