Consultant in Restorative Dentistry

9PAs

We are seeking to appoint a full-time Consultant in Restorative Dentistry (9 PA) based within our Department of Restorative Dentistry.The post offers an exciting opportunity to join a friendly and supportive team to provide care for high priority patients in restorative dentistry. The post-holder will support patient care focusing on Head & Neck Cancer and complex restorative rehabilitation patients. The role will involve training of specialist trainees in Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics.

Applicants must be fully registered with the GDC, on the GDC Specialist Register in Restorative Dentistry, or must be accredited or within 6 months of accreditation at interview stage and have completed a SAC approved training programme.The Royal London Dental Hospital has undergone major digitisation upscaling during the last 18 months. We have invested >£2.5m in electronic patient record, clinical, laboratory and teaching equipment. You will have an opportunity to work in the state-of-art and most digitally advanced dental hospital and school in the country.


Main duties of the job

Carry out pre-surgical/pre-radiotherapy dental assessments and provide written reports and communication with other members of the MDT.

Plan post-surgical/post-radiotherapy dental management either within primary or secondary care and liaise with GDPs, Community Dental Service

Carry out complex oral rehabilitation, e.g. obturators, maxillofacial prostheses, implant-based reconstructions.

Receive tertiary referrals from other regional Head & Neck cancer units without local Restorative Dentistry support

Develop the complex implant-based reconstruction service for patients after resective surgery.

Job responsibilities

To provide leadership in provision of Restorative Dental Care for Head & Neck cancer

To always work collaboratively with adjacent dental specialties, ensuring the safest and most efficient patient journeys are achieved

To take part in national clinical excellence networks for H&N cancer

To actively contribute to continuous service development and audit programme of the Restorative Dentistry department, improving protocols for patient care, developing clinical guidelines,

To take active part in postgraduate training programmes

To be an active Clinical and Educational Supervisor of trainee dentists; supervising and mentoring the junior clinical staff working in the department

The appointee will be expected to take an active part in the Clinical Governance activities, both in relation to continuing professional development and the quality and effectiveness of clinical services.

To undertake administrative and management duties appropriate to the post and to contribute to the management process of the service and wider Trust where appropriate


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC)
* On the GDC Specialist List in Restorative Dentistry or within 6 months of eligibility for inclusion
* BDS
* Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Exit Examination in Restorative Dentistry or equivalent
* Possession of a Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCT in Restorative Dentistry
* Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, or equivalent
* Head & Neck Cancer Prosthetic Rehabilitation Fellowship or equivalent.
* MSc, MClinDent, MRD or equivalent in Restorative subspecialty


Experience

* Experience in the restorative management of Head and Neck Cancer patients
* Experience in management of patients with complex restorative needs
* Experience of clinical chair-side teaching of postgraduate and undergraduate students
* Effective participation in audit by demonstration of completed audit
* Ability to appraise scientific literature critically.
* Understanding of the principles of evidence-based dentistry and ability to apply these to clinical care.
* Post-CCT experience fulfilling the role of a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry in a multidisciplinary team (Locum or Substantive)
* Teaching qualification
* Participation in clinical audits/ QUIPs relating to the care of patients with head and neck cancer
* Research relevant to Restorative Dentistry
* Publications in refereed journals


Knowledge

* Knowledge of head and neck cancer pathways, National and local guidelines and relevant scientific evidence
* Knowledge of head and neck cancer pathways, National and local guidelines and relevant scientific evidence
* Experience in management of a clinical service


Skills

* Specialist level diagnostic and treatment planning skills within Restorative dentistry
* Competence in Fixed and Removable prosthodontics, Endodontics, Periodontology and Dental implant surgery
* Ability to communicate with clarity in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen, persuade/ negotiate.
* Ability to prioritise, manage workload, expedite and facilitate care when urgent
* Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and exert appropriate authority.
* Empathy, understanding, listening skills, patience and ability to work co-operatively with others.
* Ability to work as part of a team.
* Advanced skills in restorative treatment for Head & Neck cancer, cleft & hypodontia including maxillofacial prostheses and implant surgery
* National Advanced Communication Skills Training (Connected)


Other

* Wishing to work in this post for a minimum of 0.9 FTE on a regular weekly basis.
