We are working closely alongside a Local Authority in Walsall to assist with the appointment of a Housing & Welfare Officer, on a 3-month contract, highly likely to be extended at clients discretion. Rate of Pay : £15.76 - £19.97 per hour Summary: The Housing and Welfare Officer will provide a highly specialised housing and welfare service, supporting customers with homelessness applications, housing rights, welfare benefits, and income maximisation. The role involves preventing and resolving homelessness, conducting housing options assessments, managing complex casework, representing customers at tribunals and court hearings, and working collaboratively with internal and external partners to deliver effective housing solutions. Responsibilities Provide expert advice and assistance on housing options, homelessness, welfare benefits, and tenancy rights. Assess homelessness applications under Part VII of the Housing Act 1996 and make statutory decisions in line with legislation and guidance. Conduct comprehensive housing options interviews and risk assessments. Prevent and resolve homelessness through negotiation with landlords, families, agencies, and other stakeholders. Support customers with Housing Benefit and welfare benefit claims, ensuring accurate and timely submissions. Nominate eligible applicants to housing associations, private rented sector schemes, and temporary accommodation. Qualification: Minimum of 5 GCSEs (Grade A–C) or equivalent, including Maths and English Language. Essentials : Proven experience working within Housing Legislation, Homelessness Law, and Welfare Benefits regulations. Experience managing complex housing casework and making statutory decisions. Strong knowledge of Housing Act legislation and Homelessness Code of Guidance. Ability to interpret legislation and apply discretion within statutory frameworks. Experience working with vulnerable clients and complex support needs. Please note: You should be available to work immediately or at a short notice.
