The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country. It provides a wide range of general and specialist clinical services and is a base for medical education, training and research.

The Trust comprises of four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton Hospital in Banbury.

Our values, standards and behaviours define the quality of clinical care we offer and the professional relationships we make with our patients, colleagues and the wider community. We call this Delivering Compassionate Excellence and its focus is on our values of compassion, respect, learning, delivery, improvement and excellence.

Many of our recruitment programmes use values‑based interviewing to identify those who have the skills we seek, who share our values and who are able to deliver compassionate excellence from the outset. We know that this makes a significance difference to your job satisfaction and above all the outcomes and experience of our patients and their families.

This Junior Clinical Fellowship in Neurocritical Care offers a fantastic opportunity to gain knowledge, skills, and experience of working in a tertiary multidisciplinary team. It would be an ideal post for those at F3 level or Core Training who wish to strengthen an application for speciality training in the fields of Anaesthesia, ICM, Neurology, Neurosurgery, ACCS, or Emergency Medicine. This 1 year fixed‑term post offers plenty of supervised hands‑on learning and teaching in Neurocritical care, with many opportunities to learn airway skills, central venous and arterial cannulation, and all other practical and theoretical facets on this busy but vibrant ICU.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicants will participate in twice‑daily consultant‑led ICU ward rounds, conduct daily clinical reviews of critically unwell patients, and be involved in all aspects of their daily medical care. Excellent teamworking, communication and documentation skills are required. There is plenty of opportunity for leaning and development of skills under expert supervision. The JCF will be part of the on‑call team for the Neurosciences ICU, supervised at all times by the resident Airway doctor tier.

Working for our organisation

The Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit is a specialist tertiary‑referral ICU within the West Wing, a wing of the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, UK. The John Radcliffe Hospital is a world‑renowned teaching hospital integrating acute and elective services with clinical research and education. The Neuro‑ICU works closed with Oxford Critical Care, the Major Trauma Centre, and the Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Specialist Surgery departments to provide both emergency and elective care to patients with intracranial or head and neck diseases.

The Neuro‑ICU is a busy ICU but with a strong ethos of learning, equality, and multidisciplinary engagement. The Junior Clinical Fellows are genuinely welcomed and are an essential part of this Consultant‑led team.
