Overview
Senior Overhead Line CAD Technician (Energy) role at WSP in the UK & Ireland.
What you will do
Working at the forefront of engineering innovation, you will contribute to upgrading and future-proofing the UK Overhead Line Transmission Network, ensuring resilience, efficiency, and alignment with the UK’s Net Zero 2050 goals. From early-stage concept development to detailed design, you translate complex engineering requirements into buildable solutions that power communities and industries across the nation.
You’ll collaborate with engineers, project managers, and stakeholders to deliver high-quality CAD outputs that support planning, approvals, and construction. Your work will influence projects modernising the grid, integrating energy sources, and enabling a more sustainable and secure energy future.
Responsibilities
* Deliver Drawing Outputs: Produce and support detailed engineering drawings for overhead line design, including line route and access maps, stage-by-stage, wire clearance diagrams, insulator string drawings, fittings, tower steelwork detailing, foundation design and setting out drawings, etc.
* Coordinate with Teams: Work with GCC CAD and UK teams to ensure seamless coordination and timely delivery of project deliverables.
* Standardise Drawings: Develop and implement standardised drawing practices to ensure consistency and quality across all project deliverables.
* 3D Modelling: Provide 3D modelling for multidisciplinary projects within the OHL portfolio, e.g. importing LiDAR or survey data; suggest methods to optimise model or drawing production.
* Quality Assurance: Create checklists and conduct quality checks for other engineers and designers to maintain high standards.
* Mentorship: Guide and train less experienced team members; lead training for GCC CAD technicians to build and develop the team.
* Client Collaboration: Coordinate design activities across departments; conduct design reviews and meetings with contractors and clients.
* Support proposals: Assist the wider team in preparing pricing, programmes and narratives for project proposals.
What we look for
* Experience on National Grid Electricity Transmission projects or other UK utilities (e.g., SSEN, SPEN).

* Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit. Familiarity with 3D tools (MicroStation, PLS CADD) for OHL design is desirable.
* Demonstrated teamwork and communication skills with the ability to mentor others.
* Excellent verbal and written communication with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
