Underwater Search Unit Technician role at Avon and Somerset Police

The Underwater Search Team is a dedicated unit responsible for conducting technical and specialist police underwater and confined space searches in environments where few others can operate. From recovering vital evidence to locating missing persons, the work of this team makes a profound difference to the public in some of the most challenging circumstances in which UK police operate.
About The Role
As a Technician, you will be responsible for maintaining a wide range of safety‑critical, high‑value specialist equipment. This includes ensuring all assets are serviced in line with legislation, Police Diving Rules, and manufacturer guidelines. You will also maintain accurate, auditable records and support regular inspections and audits. This role demands professionalism, precision, and a strong personal commitment.
Your Main Responsibilities
* Maintain and monitor all diving equipment (and where necessary, other specialist equipment) in accordance with training provided, manufacturers’ service schedules and Police Diving Rule, replacing items as needed within authorised budgetary limits.
* Conduct weekly minor maintenance and arrange servicing of all craft used by the Underwater Search Unit.
* Record and monitor expenditure on equipment, maintenance, and servicing; verify invoices against recorded costs.

Additional Information
This role is 24 hours per week, with a working pattern to be agreed with the successful applicant. Holding a full current driving licence or the ability to travel around the force area using alternative transport is desirable. To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 5 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 5 years.
