Job overview
The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is seeking to recruit a Consultant Spinal Deformity Surgeon to maintain capacity and improve delivery of high-quality spinal surgery. The successful candidate will join a team of orthopaedic and neurosurgical spinal surgeons, working to ensure and enhance effective patient-centered care.
The department undertakes a comprehensive range of surgical procedures, with particular expertise in reconstructive surgery for tumour, trauma, infection, and deformity.
The appointee should have a particular interest in paediatric spinal deformity surgery. The hospital aims to develop innovative and less invasive methods of deformity correction. Extensive experience with robotics, navigation, thoracoscopic surgery, and an international spinal fellowship (minimum three months abroad) is highly desirable.
Main duties of the job
* Perform a broad spectrum of surgical procedures, specializing in reconstructive surgery for tumour, trauma, infection, and deformity.
* Focus on paediatric spinal deformity surgery and contribute to developing less invasive correction techniques, leveraging experience in robotics, navigation, thoracoscopic surgery, and international fellowships.
* Deliver adult spinal deformity surgery alongside degenerative spinal procedures, participate in a comprehensive spinal on-call service, including decompression and stabilization for spinal cord and cauda equina compression. No intradural surgery is required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Complete orthopaedic training and a spinal fellowship, with a focus on adult and paediatric deformity surgery.
* Join the Spinal On-Call rota covering the West Midlands and Worcestershire, with an on-call intensity of 1:13. The rota is separate from other hospital services, with no requirement to cover non-spinal orthopaedic patients.
* The job plan initially involves approximately 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), including theatre lists, outpatient clinics, MDT meetings, and administrative duties. Additional supporting professional activities (SPAs) are available for teaching, research, supervision, and other professional duties.
Travel between hospitals is compensated, and on-call duties are remunerated accordingly. Consultants are expected to maintain accurate job plan diaries for proper remuneration.

Qualifications and training
* Full GMC Registration
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Trauma and Orthopaedics (CCT or CESR within six months of interview)
* FRCS (Tr & Orth)
* Prizes, scholarships, awards, research, presentations, and publications
Experience
* Post-CCT spinal fellowship experience in deformity surgery, with international fellowship experience preferred.
* Experience in audit, investigation, and computer literacy.
* More experienced candidates (preferably 8+ years in role) are encouraged to apply.
