About the Role The University Occupational Health and Safety Office is part of the Human Resources department within the University Administration and Services. The Office provides advice on all aspects of health and safety within the University, including fire safety. Its main function is to support the University’s Safety Executive Group, by monitoring compliance and formulating policies or guidance. This includes coordinating consultation exercises with the University’s Consultative Committee for Health and Safety. The Office also supports divisions and departments via a divisional partnership model. This includes the provision of health and safety training, monitoring and conducting incident investigations, undertaking inspections and audits, coordinating improvement programmes and the provision of a hazardous waste disposal service. Your new role as the Assistant University Fire Officer will involve working under the leadership of the University Fire Officer to support the effective delivery of the University's legal duties and compliance in accordance with Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022, and where relevant, the Building Safety Act 2022. The post holder will be expected to be fully conversant with current fire legislation and relevant codes of practice, British Standards and building regulations (all Purpose Groups) and able to interpret and advise on the implications for the University. The post holder will also need knowledge of the fire safety requirements for persons with reduced mobility and sensory disabilities. The Assistant University Fire Officer will need to communicate with individuals across the University, including research supervisors and, where appropriate, the heads of department. However, the ability to communicate with the whole range of employees, contractors, visitors, and students on University premises, as well as external agencies, is essential. About You

Essential selection criteria

7. Excellent knowledge of fire safety legislation.
8. A minimum of a NVQ level 4 certificate (or equivalent) in fire safety.
9. Ability to motivate and lead others in finding workable solutions to fire safety deficiencies and giving advice on a wide range of subjects.
10. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal - the post holder will need to work with and influence a range of people of varying disciplines, including enforcing agencies, external consultants, University staff at all levels, and students to achieve solutions in the best interests of the University.
11. Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, identify key areas for improvement and suggest practicable solutions to complex issues.

Desirable selection criteria

12. Experience of conducting, and providing QA for, fire risk assessments
13. Previous experience of fire safety in a research environment.
14. Good knowledge of fire alarm systems, sprinkler protection, compartmentation, emergency lighting and smoke ventilation systems.
15. Membership of a fire industry professional body, such as the IFE, IFPO, IFSM etc.
16. Educated to degree level or equivalent
Sponsorship and Right To Work This role meets the criteria for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa. The University will meet the cost of the Skilled Worker visa and NHS surcharge for applicants that require a visa.
