Job Summary
Working for Cheltenham Peripheral Primary Care Network (PCN), based at one of five GP Practices serving about 54,000 patients. The PCN surrounds Cheltenham town, extending from Leckhampton to Bishops Cleeve and Winchcombe. The PCN is growing its multi-disciplinary team to provide a holistic approach to our patient population. Current team includes Social Prescribing Link Workers, Care Coordinators, Clinical Pharmacists, Physician Associates, Pharmacy Technicians and a Mental Health Nurse. The PCN is recruiting a team of GP Assistants to work alongside the GP team in busy practices. This is an exciting new role designed to support GPs and the smooth running of clinics. Successful post holders will be supported to complete an accredited Health Education England training programme and achieve formal certification.
Main duties of the job
A GP Assistant (GPA) will support the GP(s) in the smooth running of clinics by performing routine administration and clinical tasks on behalf of the GP, freeing up time for patient care. The duties will be tailored based on skill and experience and may include all or some of the duties listed in the job description. The role is new and provides an opportunity to work with GPs to develop it and improve the experience for patients and staff in a busy clinic. It may involve both clinical knowledge and efficient administrative skills to enable a smoother pathway.
Experience and a strong desire to work in primary care are essential.

Job responsibilities – Duties
The role may include some or all of the following duties depending on experience and skills:
* Sort and prioritise clinical post for the GP; signpost to others such as the clinical pharmacist
* Extract information from clinical letters for coding and add to notes
* Arrange appointments, referrals, tests and follow-up
* Complete basic forms for the GP to review (e.g., insurance, mortgage, benefits applications)
* Explain treatment procedures to patients
* Assist the GP in liaising with outside agencies (e.g., arranging on-call advice or hospital admission while the GP continues consultations)

* Maintain patient and staff confidentiality in line with Practice policies
* Handle information relating to patients, carers, colleagues and the Practice as a business entity confidentially and only disclose to authorised persons

Person Specification
Essential
* GCSE Maths and English at Grade A-C or equivalent
* Understanding of confidentiality and data security
* Ability to work in a team and independently as required

* Ability to maintain confidentiality, tact and diplomacy
Desirable
* Care Certificate
* Competence in full Health Care Assistant duties
* NVQ level 3 in Administration or Health Care
