We are looking to appoint a dynamic innovative and forward thinking NHS Locum Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics for a period of 6 months to provide advice and specialist expertise throughout the full range of Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery, whilst we await the arrival on newly appointed substantive colleagues. An interest in trauma surgery is essential as this post will be predominantly in providing emergency orthopaedic care through fracture clinics, trauma lists and on-call.
You will be joining our team of consultants to provide general Trauma & Orthopaedic expertise to our population from both Torbay Hospital, but also with some elective operating at the South West Ambulatory Orthopaedic Centre (Nightingale Exeter - SWAOC). We are part of a highly regarded DGH both locally and nationally, in a lovely part of the country between the South Coast and Dartmoor National Park and are a progressive department constantly seeking to improve our service delivery and with an active research interest both locally and by involvement in national trials. South Devon is recognised as a health community which has achieved considerable improvements in patient care due to integrated working and good relationships with our community partners.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide advice and specialist expertise throughout the full range of Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery, although it is recognised that he/she will have a broad range of skills with a special interest in trauma and urgent orthopaedic care.
Senior and middle grade medical staff are actively involved in teaching; practical training and audit, weekly tutorials, monthly audit meetings and clinical conferences at Torbay, and Plymouth. Ad hoc teaching of visiting undergraduates or student electives/postgraduate lectures along with General Medical, Dental Practitioners and junior medical staff will also be a requirement.
Attendance at monthly Clinical Audit meetings is expected. Research is encouraged, along with involvement in MDT teaching. Attendance at Clinical Governance/Clinical Risk/Health & Safety meetings is also expected.
On-call commitment is 1:12 with prospective cover. Comprising micro ward round, ad-hoc lists, clinics and joint operating. O n -call is truncated into a one week block where the consultant is not routinely scheduled elective commitments. There is an all day consultant-delivered trauma list on Saturday and Sunday, and 1 night every 3 rd weekday is an overnight non-resident on-call session.
General commitments include attendance at departmental meetings which may be out of hours, and involvement in clinical and educational supervision roles.
The trauma and orthopaedic directorate sits within the Planned Care / Surgery Care Group at Torbay Hospital. A comprehensive outpatient service is provided to all South Devon patients, both for trauma and elective orthopaedics. Fracture clinics are held at Torbay Hospital each weekday morning. Elective outpatient clinics currently take place at Torbay and Newton Abbot Hospitals.
We are situated in a very beautiful part of the country in the South West of England with a favourable mild climate close to both sea and moors. Opportunities for outdoor activities both on and off the water abound, with easy access to the neighbouring centres of Plymouth and Exeter.
