We are looking for an experienced Crane Operator with Spider Crane experience to join our Lifting Operations team, working on construction and industrial projects across the UK.
You will operate a range of cranes to lift, move and position heavy materials and equipment safely and efficiently, with a particular focus on compact/spider crane work in restricted-access environments.
Key responsibilities
* Plan and organise lifting operations, assessing loads, ground conditions and site constraints, and selecting the correct crane, configuration and lifting accessories in line with current legislation and company procedures.
* Set up, operate and de-rig cranes (including spider/compact cranes) to lift, move and accurately position loads, maintaining full control of speed, direction and boom movements.
* Monitor load, radius, slew and stability at all times, working within rated capacities and stopping operations if conditions become unsafe.
* Carry out daily and weekly inspections and basic maintenance, including fluid levels, wire ropes, chains, hooks, outriggers and safety devices, and report any defects immediately.
* Work closely with Appointed Persons, Crane Supervisors, Slinger/Signallers, Banksmen and site management to complete lifts safely and efficiently using agreed signals and communication methods.
* Follow all health and safety, environmental and site rules, including exclusion zones, lifting plans, RAMS and emergency procedures.
* Maintain accurate records of crane operations, inspections, defects, maintenance and any incidents or near misses.
* Participate in refresher training and toolbox talks to keep skills, knowledge and certifications up to date.
Skills and experience
* Proven experience as a crane operator on construction or industrial sites, including compact/spider crane operations in confined or restricted areas.
* Strong understanding of lifting operations, load charts, SWLs, ground bearing pressures and working around other trades on busy sites.
* Excellent hand–eye coordination, spatial awareness and the ability to carry out precise lifts in tight or complex environments.
* Ability to read and follow lift plans, method statements and risk assessments, and to take clear instruction via radio or hand signals.
* Physically fit, comfortable working outdoors in all weather, at height where required, and handling mats, outrigger pads and lifting accessories.
* Safety-focused, with a methodical approach and the confidence to stop work if conditions are unsafe.
Qualifications and certification (UK)
* Valid CPCS or NPORS crane operator card (essential).
* Spider/compact crane certification – typically CPCS A66 Compact Crane (Spider Crane) or equivalent NPORS/manufacturer-approved ticket (essential or strongly preferred, depending on role).
* Current CITB Health, Safety & Environment test (to support CPCS/NPORS card validity).
* Relevant NVQ or willingness to work towards NVQ Level 2 in Compact/Spider Crane or Lifting Operations to obtain/maintain a Blue (Competent Operator) card.
* Valid CSCS card (or equivalent) for construction sites.
* Full UK driving licence; entitlement to tow or drive larger vehicles is an advantage where cranes are moved on the road.
What we offer
* Competitive salary based on experience and certifications, with potential enhancements for additional tickets and responsibilities.
* Ongoing training and development, including further crane categories, lifting qualifications and refresher courses.
* Opportunity to work on varied and technically interesting projects with a safety-focused lifting team.
* Standard company benefits package (e.g. holiday allowance, pension, PPE and workwear provided).
