Waste and Recycling Officer
10.5 hours per week
Temporary up to 31 August
£33, - £35, pro rata / £18.15 - £19.55 per hour (including Distant Islands Allowance)
Orkney Islands Council is looking for an enthusiastic and committed individual to fulfil the role of Waste and Recycling Officer on a part-time basis.
The exact working pattern will be subject to agreement.
The post involves dealing with the public, businesses, community groups and schools, to assist in the understanding of waste minimisation and recycling in Orkney with a view to reducing waste produced by householders and businesses and improving Orkney’s recycling performance.
You will be expected to engage directly with the residential and business community, helping householders and organisations to understand the waste and recycling service and the ways in which they can engage with it. This will require strong communication skills, customer focus, a willingness to find solutions and an ability to understand and implement regulations and policy. You will also be expected to identify areas for improvement and to work with the rest of the team to implement and deliver these opportunities.
You will be computer literate and have recent experience and knowledge of Microsoft Office packages with particular emphasis on Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
You should be educated to HNC, SVQ2/3 or equivalent qualification in waste management or environmental science or have at least two years previous relevant experience.
You should be able to travel efficiently and effectively between work locations within Orkney including the outer islands to meet the operational requirements of the Service.
