Lead Psychiatrist (South Care Group, AMH)

The closing date is 03 June 2025

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced psychiatrist (Consultants or SAS) to become a Lead Psychiatrist (LP) and work as part of the collective leadership team in the South Care Group (NYY&S), ensuring effective and safe patient care in a person-centred manner with decision-making close to the patient.

Applicants with experience in Adult, Older People, Children and Young People, Learning Disability, and Autism services are welcome to apply. The substantive clinical base will depend on the candidate's specialty and available posts at interview. The weekly job plan will be discussed individually and can be flexible.

This role is for AMH HHR (Planned Care) - 1 position, 1.5 PA. Please note the framework is under review and may change.


Main duties of the job

The Lead Psychiatrist will demonstrate Trust values, work within a collective leadership team, and ensure patient-centred, effective, and safe care with decision-making close to the patient.

They will work within a service tier level of the care group model as part of a collective leadership team (CLT), influencing operational responsibilities and clinical pathways with shared accountability for service quality. They will be the professional lead for doctors in their service, responsible for standards of medical practice across inpatient and community teams, and lead on quality and safety improvements.

The Lead Psychiatrist and CLT will be accessible and authoritative in clinical areas, providing reliable support to service users.

The post holder will offer professional advice on medical matters, lead the medical workforce, ensure ongoing professional development, and provide clinical supervision for all doctors.

Job responsibilities

The Lead Psychiatrist will embody Trust values, work within a collective leadership model, and ensure high-quality, safe, patient-centred care with decision-making close to patients.

They will work within a service tier of the care group model as part of a collective leadership team (CLT), influencing operational and clinical pathways, sharing accountability for service quality, and leading on safety and quality initiatives.

They will serve as a visible, accessible, and authoritative presence in clinical areas, ensuring fundamental care standards.

The post holder will provide medical advice, lead the medical workforce, and ensure continuous professional development and supervision structures are in place.

In collaboration with the CLT, they will ensure services are delivered within a safe, effective governance framework, complying with local, national, and statutory standards.

They will act as a link with the Medical Directorate regarding workforce planning and performance management, and attend governance groups to ensure high standards of practice.

The post holder will manage and supervise the medical team, including job planning and professional guidance.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Medical Degree
* Current GMC registration or equivalent
* Evidence of ongoing professional development
* Training in Management Leadership
* Postgraduate qualifications in relevant areas (e.g., Leadership, Education, TEWV QIS)
* Certified Leader or within timescale
* Registered on the specialist register


Experience

* Extensive experience in relevant areas:
* At least 1 year at consultant level (support provided if only 12 months service) or minimum of 12 years postgraduate service for SAS doctors
* Experience in relevant specialty
* Effective leadership within multidisciplinary teams
* Collaborative work with statutory, voluntary, and private agencies
* Teaching and training experience
* Knowledge of quality and service improvement initiatives
* Understanding of governance and assurance issues
* Experience with research and development activities
* At least 18 months at consultant level
* Strategic management experience in clinical and managerial issues
* Participation in quality and service improvement initiatives
* Leadership across multiple systems
* Policy development within healthcare organizations
* Organizational change management experience
* Representation at external forums
* Managing complex HR and financial issues
