Neonatal Sister / Charge Nurse

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated,passionate, enthusiastic and caring neonatal nurse to become part of the Band 6leadership team at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust. We provide care for babies and their familiesat University Hospital of North Durham and Darlington Memorial Hospital, indedicated neonatal units that work closely with the Midwifery and Paediatricdepartments. With 12 cots at UHND and 8 cots at DMH, we provide care for babiesand their families from 30 weeks gestation, but also provide stabilisation forcritically ill babies prior to retrieval by the regional transport team. Bothsites have a well-developed transitional care service which enables babies andtheir mothers to stay together when requiring additional support.

Neonatal experience plus qualification inspeciality is essential alongside current NLS status. All candidates for thisposition must possess a current NMC Registration.


Main duties of the job

The post requires experience, knowledge and skills ofworking within a Neonatal Unit at a senior level. As a band 6 nurse you will beresponsible for co-ordinating shifts, attending emergency situations,supporting staff, cot management and working closely with the wider MDT toensure the provision of effective nursing care and the planning of familyintegrated care.

This is a highly challenging, but extremelyrewarding role. Our strong team work ethos enables all staff to develop andlearn new skills. The post holder will be supported to undertake additionalleadership training relevant to the role.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities

The post holder is responsible for the day-to-day managementof the unit and available for 24-hour support in the absence of the wardmanager. To monitor cot acuity on the unit and able to risk assess thedepartment and have a thorough understanding of the escalation process.

The post holder will act as clinical leader and supervisorto junior staff. Maintaining and promoting the trust behaviours and standardsexpected of the team.

The post holder will have the experience, knowledge andskills to be able to provide the continued assessment of Neonatal care needs,the development, implementation and evaluation of programs of care.

The post holder will be able to implement and support theemergency, normal and community care of the Neonate.

The post holder will be able to help develop the service andstaff to support progressive neonatal care.

The post holder must perform at all times inaccordance with the NMC code of professional conduct and be particularly awareof his /her professional accountability.


Person Specification


Experience

* Extensive and appropriate post registration neonatal nursing experience
* Experience of Clinical Supervision
* Experience of professional development / appraisal facilitation
* Sound knowledge of national and local networks / guidelines
* Proven experience as a nurse leader
* Proven ability to work effectively both independently and within a team


Qualifications

* Registered RNC / RSCN / RN educated to degree level
* Recognised teaching / assessing qualification
* Evidence of ongoing professional development
* Recognised teaching / assessing qualification
* Evidence of study relating to leadership / management


Special Requirements

* Commitment to undertake appropriate courses to maintain professional development
* Ability to work across site where necessary

* Knowledge and understanding of clincal risk management
* Current knowledge of Safeguarding Children Legislation, Policies and Procedures.
