Senior Pension Technical Consultant (LGPS)

A Leading Professional Services Company specialises in providing a wide range of pension-related services. We focus on creating and implementing resilient, responsible pension strategies to help organisations and their employees secure a more stable financial future.

Our services include pensions administration, consultancy, and the latest technology and engagement techniques. The business has been managing pension schemes for over 50 years, covering schemes of various shapes and sizes.


Due to continued growth, we are looking for a Senior Technical Consultant. In this role, you will provide expert technical leadership on the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), ensuring that legislative and regulatory developments are accurately interpreted and translated into clear operational, client, and member-facing outcomes.

The role supports compliance, change delivery, and service improvement by working closely with clients, administration teams, project teams, and senior stakeholders. You will also coach less experienced colleagues and contribute to the development of robust technical solutions.


Job Description

Key Accountabilities

  • Monitor, research, and interpret changes to LGPS regulations, statutory guidance, HMRC requirements, and related pensions legislation.
  • Assess the impact of legislative and regulatory changes on administration processes, member calculations, employer requirements, systems, templates, and client deliverables.
  • Provide authoritative technical advice on complex LGPS cases, including benefits, retirements, deaths, transfers, aggregations, discretions, and remedy-related issues.
  • Produce and review technical communications, including client papers, briefing notes, reports, training materials, and procedural guidance.
  • Support the implementation of regulatory changes by working with operational, project, systems, and client teams to design compliant and practical solutions.
  • Lead or contribute to technical projects, testing activity, quality assurance, and sign-off of calculations, letters, and process changes.
  • Develop strong client and stakeholder relationships, explaining complex technical matters clearly and credibly.
  • Coach, mentor, and support the development of less experienced colleagues, helping to build technical capability and resilience across the team.
  • Identify opportunities to improve controls, efficiency, consistency, and member outcomes across LGPS service delivery.
  • Represent the business in discussions with clients, suppliers, industry bodies, or governance forums where technical expertise is required.


Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours

  • Deep knowledge of the public sector regulatory framework, including benefit structures, governance requirements, employer responsibilities, and current industry developments. LGPS-specific experience is beneficial but not essential.
  • Strong understanding of pensions tax, disclosure requirements, and compliance considerations.
  • Ability to analyse complex legislation and translate it into clear operational requirements and practical guidance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging for clients, colleagues, and senior stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving, judgement, and decision-making skills, particularly in relation to complex member or scheme cases.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, deliver high-quality work to deadlines, and contribute effectively to project activity.
  • A collaborative approach, with the confidence to influence, challenge constructively, and build credibility across teams.
  • Commitment to knowledge sharing, continuous improvement, and supporting the development of others.
