Offer description

This is an exciting new role working with a team of healthcare professionals within the pulmonary function and sleep apnoea service in the beautiful setting of the South West of England in the costal City of Plymouth. There will be opportunity to develop skills and also put your own skills to the test providing a range of diagnostics test using physiological measures. Also support patient with the treatment of sleep apnoea using mechanical therapy such as CPAP. The current team is growing in numbers with service provision across multiple sites and expected to work in the newly built CDC in centre of Plymouth near the historical barbican.


Job Responsibilities

1. Plan, undertake and perform simple, specialist, complex and highly complex diagnostic assessments in accordance with ARTP/BTS guidelines.
o Spirometry, peak flow rates, flow/volume loops
o Gas transfer
o Reversibility of airways obstruction with bronchodilators
o Field exercise tests (6MWT)
o Overnight sleep apnoea screening
o Arterial blood gas performance and analysis
o Exhaled and nasal nitric oxide
o Bronchial provocation tests for the diagnosis of asthma/bronchial hyper-responsiveness (Mannitol, Exercise-induced asthma)
o Respiratory muscle assessment
o CPAP assessment and provision
o Hypoxic challenge
2. Production of reports
3. Verbal and written interpretation to referring medical team and other professionals where appropriate for simple and specialist assessments.
4. Be trained in Basic Life Support


Communications & Working Relationships

1. Obtain brief patient medical history prior to testing to ensure safe practice.
2. Communicate requirements for accurate performance of appropriate investigations to patients/participants/service users through building and maintaining good rapport.
3. Communicate basic interpretation of results to appropriate senior healthcare professionals, e.g. senior physiologists, consultants, nurses.


Other

1. Service development and improvement.
2. Ensure continual service development and improvement: through maintaining up-to-date knowledge of specialist area; obtaining membership and securing roles within national professional body and/or international societies; being regulated via voluntary/mandatory register of practitioners (e.g. RCCP, HCPC).
3. Ensure equipment used in lung function assessments is functioning correctly by performing calibration and validation techniques including mechanical verification and biological control procedures for quality assurance and quality control.
4. Report any faulty equipment to senior colleagues and arrange corrective maintenance.
5. Review department SOPs on request of senior staff to ensure they are up-to-date and fit best practice.
6. Ensure consumables required to maintain efficient running service are stocked and communicate ordering needs.
7. Maintain continual professional development.


Person Specification – Qualifications and Experience

* Demonstrable experience working within respiratory and sleep physiological measures unit.
* Competent in performing full PFTs.
* Experience in field exercise testing.
* Demonstrable experience with respiratory polygraph validation.
* Qualification in clinical physiology or equivalent.
* AHCS registration.
* Performance of ABG/CBG.


Person Specification – Knowledge & Experience

* A thorough proven knowledge of Respiratory and Sleep Physiology.
* A wide range of abilities in performing and reporting lung function tests.
* A proven sound knowledge of scoring sleep studies.
* Demonstrable experience as a Band 5 respiratory physiologist.
* Respiratory muscle function testing.
* Demonstrable experience working in respiratory/sleep physiology.
