Course Summary
At French A level you will learn about aspects of French culture and contemporary society, looking at diversity and the benefits it brings. You will study highlights of French-speaking artistic culture, including francophone music and cinema, and learn about political engagement and who wields political power in the French-speaking world.

Les origines d’une société multiculturelle. Comment est-ce que la société française est-elle devenue multiculturelle? Would you like to find out more about the issues surrounding multiculturalism in French speaking countries? How successful is cultural diversity and what can be done to promote true integration – is there such a thing? Explore this through virtual and/or real-life encounters.
As part of this subject, students can enjoy:
a film and literature study day, university taster sessions, the opportunity to correspond regularly with a French student, a trip to Germany, support to organise work experience, international competition opportunities – translation and poetry.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
You will explore the influence of the past on present-day French-speaking communities. Throughout the course, you will learn the language in the context of French-speaking countries and the issues and influences which have shaped them. You will study texts and film and have the opportunity to carry out independent research on an area of your choice.
Students will be assessed by sitting two exams and a non-exam speaking assessment.
Paper 1 (2 hour and 30 minutes) will assess listening, reading and writing.
Paper 2 (2 hours) will assess writing. Students will be expected to write two essays which critically analyse the set text and file you will study.
Entry requirements
Students must have achieved at least five strong passes (at least Grade 5) at GCSE level, including English Language, Maths and French.
