About the role
Balfour Beatty is seeking an experienced and driven Senior Design Manager to lead the design delivery of a major highways project in North Hykeham. This is a pivotal role within a high‑profile infrastructure scheme that will play a key part in improving regional connectivity, supporting economic growth, and enhancing transport networks in the area.
As a Senior Design Manager, you will take ownership of the design process from concept through to construction, ensuring that all technical outputs are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards. Working at the heart of a multidisciplinary team, you will coordinate designers, consultants, and stakeholders, driving innovation while maintaining strict compliance with industry standards and project requirements.
This role offers the opportunity to influence key design decisions on a complex infrastructure scheme, while mentoring junior team members and contributing to the overall success of the project.
What you’ll be doing
* Lead and manage the design process across all project stages, from feasibility through to detailed design and construction
* Coordinate internal and external design teams, ensuring effective collaboration and communication
* Ensure designs meet all technical, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements
* Manage design programmes, deliverables, and budgets in line with project objectives
* Identify and mitigate design risks, implementing solutions to maintain progress and quality
* Liaise with clients, stakeholders, and supply chain partners to ensure alignment and successful delivery
* Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to junior design team members
* Drive continuous improvement and innovation in design practices
Who we’re looking for
* Extensive experience in design management within highways or major infrastructure projects
* Strong technical understanding of highways design standards and processes
* Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage complex design packages
* Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
* Experience working within a Tier 1 contractor or consultancy environment
* Degree‑qualified in engineering, design, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
* Chartered status (or working towards) with a relevant professional body is desirable
