Overview

Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician

Interviews to be held on Mon 8th & Tues 9th September 2025

Job Summary:

The position of trainee pharmacy technician is a two-year fixed term post which will enable the trainee to complete an advanced apprenticeship in pharmacy leading to application for registration with The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) to practice as a professionally registered Pharmacy Technician.

Whilst in training the post holder will carry out pharmaceutical duties, under the direct supervision of an appropriate person in all sections of the pharmacy department. Some of the duties will be in the form of training exercises and competence-based assessments in conjunction with the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in The Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians, including release to college.

The role holder will also have dedicated time working and developing skills within a community pharmacy setting each week. The role holder will be working with the support and supervision of our experienced Clinical Pharmacists across the practice sites, in the Dispensary and community pharmacy.


Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities:

* Attend a two-year course comprising periodic attendance at college to undertake the Level 3 Diploma in The Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians and gathering a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate competence. (The Sheffield College – Course Provider)
* Participate in appraisals and personal reviews and work to achieve set objectives.
* Develop professional and pharmaceutical skills through participation throughout the programme\'s training rotation model.
* Undertake study in own time when necessary.
* Be aware of and work within practice and pharmacy procedures and policies, accepted standards of practice and relevant legislation. (E. g Health and Safety, Medicine Act).
* Undertake medicines reconciliation in accordance with practice protocols and to update patients’ medical records / prescribing accordingly under the supervision of the clinical pharmacist.
* Support the achievement of the practice’s prescribing Quality and Outcomes Framework targets.
* Participate in medication audits.
* Support the Practices to provide patient information leaflets and medicine awareness.
* Take a proactive approach to the safe handling of prescriptions, including assessment of risk and making recommendations for improvement.

Administration

Other duties and responsibilities to be undertaken may include any or all the items in the following list:

* Taking messages and passing on information as appropriate.
* Computer data entry/data allocation and collation, processing and recording information in accordance with practice procedures.
* Initiating contact with and responding to requests from patients, other team members and associated healthcare professionals and providers.
* Helping to maintain a positive, patient focussed culture.
* Helping to maintain a positive, supportive culture across the whole of the practice team.
* Any other duties commensurate with this position.

Duties will vary from time to time under the direction of the Partners / Practice Managers dependent on current and evolving practice workload and staffing levels.


Community Pharmacy

* Contribute to the provision of a dispensary service for patients, using the pharmacy computer systems for stock control and labelling.
* Prepare labels and dispense medicines for patients.
* Maintain satisfactory stock levels, storage and turnover of medicines to ensure the quality of medicines are maintained.
* Identify actual and potential stock problems to other staff members as necessary.
* Complete and maintain accurate records where appropriate.
* Issue medicines to patients, including appropriate medicine information.
* Using communication skills to receive enquiries and other appropriate information from healthcare professionals, patients and members of the public.


Communication

The post-holder should recognize the importance of effective communication within the team and will strive:

* To communicate effectively with the administration and Practice team members.
* To recognize people’s needs for alternative methods of communication and respond accordingly.
* To attend staff meetings and arrange team meetings as and when required to communicate any relevant information or updates.


Health and Safety

The post holder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others’ health, safety and security as defined in the Practice Health & Safety Policy, the Practice health & Safety Manual, and the practice infection control policy and published procedures.

This will include:

* Using personal security systems within the workplace according to Practice guidelines. Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks.
* Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills.
* Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards.
* Actively reporting of health and safety hazards and infection hazards immediately when recognised.
* Keeping own work areas and general / patient areas generally clean, assisting in the maintenance of general standards of cleanliness consistent with the scope of the job holder’s role.
* Undertaking periodic infection control training (minimum annually).
* Reporting potential risks identified.

The post-holder will participate in any training programme implemented by the Practice as part of this employment, such training to include:

* Participation in an annual individual performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development.
* Taking responsibility for own development, learning and performance and demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work.

Person Specification

Attributes

Academic/ Vocational qualifications

Essential

GCSE’s: Maths C, English and Science (Grade 4-9, A-C) and 3 other subjects at a minimum of grade C (4)

Or

Pharmacy services QCF Level 2 (or equivalent) with 12 months current experience and hold a Functional Skills level 2 in Maths and English

Or

Three A levels, one of which is a relevant science subject and Maths C (GCSE or equivalent)

Or

Degree in science or humanities and Maths C (GCSE or equivalent)

Experience: Essential

* Previous experience with the public
* Basic computer skills
* Keyboard, XL Word, PowerPoint

Desirable:

* Experience of prescribing/clinical systems such as Systmone.
* Recent previous experience within comparable role in General Practice or community.

Knowledge/ Skills

* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

* Ability to work under pressure in a busy environment
